Is this a old buck or a young buck? Would you take him if presented with the opportunity?

Looks like a young buck with lots of potential. I would hold off on him to see what he looks like next year.

He is licking the milk off his lips in the first pic.
That buck will never amount to much. Pass.

IMO he's neither young nor old. I'd say he looks like he's in the mid range. Just poor genetics is all. If you are looking for more than a meat buck, I'd say Pass.

He looks like one of those welfare deer that lives between a couple of houses and eats garbage. Never ventures far away.

I am going to go against the grain here. I think he is an old boy about on his last leg.

He is very thick in the rear and in the stomach. Young bucks have a tucked in stomach, almost like a greyhound. This guy has an old gut on him.

He also is very thick in the hind quarters, which is very rare for a young buck. Young bucks look very sleek in the hind quarters, and this buy does not look very sleek to me.

His pedicles are much too thick and protrude at too flat of an angle to be a young buck. A young buck with those thick of pedicles is very rare. Most young bucks have more of a vertical direction to their pedicles, which becomes more horizontal as they get older.

I may be completely wrong, but he looks like he is guant and withered. Looks like he has lost most of his body mass and may not make it through the winter.

Just MHO.

Happy Hunting!

He doesn't have the sway back or roman nose of a very mature buck. I would guess him at 3 yrs old with very poor genes. Pass......

:( Somebody didn't like bouncing betty :(

I agree with BigFin that this ol' buck is beyond his prime. Not every old mature muley carries the typical characteristics such as a roman nose. This buck has carried bigger antlers and has seen better days.

Middle aged buck and no, I would not shoot him even if it was the last day of season even though he needs to be culled out. (poor genetics).

This buck lives on our farm. I imagine he is 6-7. He has had the same antler configuration since he was 1 or 2. I imagine he will get hit by a car before he dies of old age. Now, to keep the shed hunters from tresspassing,.......

Looks like an old timer to me. Look at those bases. Hes past his prime, and ill bet he wasnt a monster then either.

THAT BUCK LOOK'S LIKE IT JUST WOKE UP FROM A 3 YEAR COMA!
me and my son would walk.....
a road hunters trophy buck!!

That's not true. Nice mature bucks have white masks. Many old bucks get an old matted grey-face just like an old dog would...and just like this old buck. I thought it was already settled this backyard buck is at least 6-7 yrs old, right?

Younger buck, look how gray his face is. Still has a fawn like slenderness to the face. Narrow between his bases. Poor genetics like everyone else is saying. I would pass even though he needs culled.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-05-07 AT 07:25AM (MST)[p]Nice pics as usual, what camera are you using. Thanks for the sharing.

Looks like a skanky old doe to me. Someone must have tranq'ed her and stuck some sheds in her melon.

Mountain- hope you don't mind. No offense meant by shoppin' your photo.

Packout - are you serious? I'd have to agree with most that this is a 3 year old with bad genetics and perhaps less than ideal feed. But I'd still like to hear from Packout about whether he really knows the deer.

My first impression was that this buck is struggling to survive on the forage that is available. He looks like all of the bucks that are year round residents of Zion National Park. They don't get the proper nutrients and this time of year they look real scruffy. Even the lighting in your photos looks like Zion.

The second pic shows mass at the bases, older buck, I would go with 6-7 years easy.

I wouldn't shoot em just because of that warty looking stuff on his neck, yuck! He's only old because even the lion's won't eat him with that nasty growth on him.

Those look like cockle burrs (seed pods) to me. Check out that antler slash on his shoulder. OUCH!!! That left a mark.

PO knows the deal. Just listen to him. No debate on this one.

This is the only time I will ever agree with you PO. I promise.;-)

cockel burrs???????
I thought they were warts BOBCATBESS gave him....
3 years old park buck!

packout, unless you live in highland ut just north of lone peak high school you havent seen this deer. i've seen this deer for the last 2 months, first by west rock and then just north of lone peak!! and i would think he is around 5 and very poor genetics.mountain_hunter there are other deer with this buck with better genetics. i would pass on him if i ran across him in the field.

KTC, we have agreed on more stuff than just this. Like your good looking horses.

As for the other comments.... Some people's kids.

I've looked at these photos a dozen times and I am certain this is an old Buck, well past his prime. In fact, I wonder if he was ever a good buck as a result of poor genes.
He is close to being critter food!
