My Colorado D9 buck

This is the buck I shot on the Western Slope of Colorado last november. He will only score around 170" but I love his browtines, mass and he is right at 30" wide. He will look good on the wall even with his crabby forks.

My buddy in the picture below shot at this buck 9 times on three different days before I was able to take him. (Dewitt + 9 shots= D9 name).

We found him on a Monday and Dewitt shot at him from a rest at 275 yards twice and 2 more long shots. He followed up and found no blood and realized he missed all of the shots.

The next day, he went back to the same area and found him heading to his bed in the the thick cedars. Dewitt was able to take a quick snap shot at 30 yards but missed again.

The third day the buck was in nearly the same spot as the first day. Dewitt was able to get two more good shots and two moving shots that missed also( he borrowed another gun from his cousin just in case). I was setup down the ridge and I saw the buck moving towards me. I could of taken a shot at 300 yards but I passed, as the deer was moving to me so I thought I would wait for him to move closer. I had him in the crosshairs and he stepped into a tiny ravine that I didnt realize was there and he disappeared.

The fourth day Dewitt let me go to the spot where he had all of the shots from in case the deer came back. 30 minutes after daylight the buck stepped out and I was able to harvest him with one shot.

It was bitter sweet for me to take the buck because Dewitt had so much invested in him (nine shots over 3 days with 2 different guns)

I had an uneasy feeling as we packed him to the fourwheeler (Dewitt even helped) but I got over it and had time for another picture!

Great buck! Don't feel too bad though, your buddy had more than his fair share of chances at him and, hell, if you can't hit him with 9 shots and 2 guns, do you really deserve anything?

Nice buck and great story. Thanks for sharing. Kind of surprised the buck kept hanging out in the same spot day after day with all the comotion. I've never had that luck.

He was rutting and I dont think he wanted to leave his does.

I believe there were bigger bucks in the area but he was a BIG bodied deer so he was the boss of the area and didnt let other buck around.

If Barrett is doing his mounts on a first come first serve basis, it may be a while before it is done. I took him my antelope last week and there were a lot of animals brought in between between the goat and my deer.

The buck wasn't handicapped, he was just horny. I can understand that, I went to the same bar for 4 years when I was horny in college.

I can vouch for Pud going to the same bar for 4 years and never getting any. When the rest of us were bringing home the chicks Pud was still trying the same old techniques. The only difference was that Pud was NOT the big dog on campus and yes I will be at the rifle range. My hat says it all. No excuses from me. I blew it on that deer. I am just happy one of us could finish the son of a gun off.

Thats one heck of a story. Sure wish I could of been there to wittness the whole thing. Sure was fun giving dewitt heck about missing all those shots, I did feel bad a first. If you cant hit them then you cant take them home. Belive me I know all about it. Sure was nice walking up on that deer and actually seeing him on the ground at least one of us got to take him home. Better luck next time dewitt.
