Does anybody know anything about this area for blacktails??? I have heard some good stuff but Iam not sure if I should even try or should I go more north or more west..This area is on the border of Glenn county and mendicino. Any help would be appreciated..
thanks curtis..

Nelly, SMW harbors some pretty decent blacktails. Several years ago I saw a double dropped tined 3 x 4 that was about 25 inches wide. The wilderness is home to a couple of booners. Hunt high early in the season and in the oaks and chapparal near the end of the season in the transition range. These deer are migratory. Good luck.

YBO thanks for the advice!!! I have a freind that worked on a ranch in Zeina and I've seen some nice bucks up that way. But I just didn't want to travel up that far. I wanted to stay alittle closer to home, agien thanks for your help. Oh yeah, is there alot of hunting pressure in that area?? I saw on the map that there are alot of trails, I was just woundering about the other hunters...Also I don't have any horses so I'll be on foot but thats no problem I just don't want to hike back in 10-12 miles and set up camp and see a hundred other hunters on horses.....
thanks agien

Expect extreme hunting pressure opening weekend . During the week is not as bad . The trail system covers the mountain too well in my opinion . Don't expect solitude until later in the season , during the week .

Sheepshooter, Thanks!!! Sheepshooter, YBO I was also wondering if I should just go up a little more north in Glenn county on the border of mendocino and glenn. It seems there is less roads (not sure how many trails) so it would seem there might be less pressure ? I don't know does any one have any advice?? Also is there any place that I can get maps that show all the trails.. Thanks for all the help..

Try topozone.com for maps to check an area aout . If it looks promising then order some topo maps of the area . Also try calling the rager station in Covello I believe they will send you some forest service maps for free . The area from SMW North through the Yolla Bolly's , Trinity Wilderness etc. holds some monsters . Try locating areas up high for the first part of the season . If you are a backpacker you have an advantage . Try to find areas without major trailheads ( or better yet no trailheads ) . Get at least 3-4 miles from the road and locate water within a mile or two . Start scouting on maps to narrow down areas . Once you think you have found a couple make a trip and scout it out on foot . A small saw or pruning loppers will help with navigating through thick areas , although I believe it may be illegal to cut a trail . Hope this helps good luck .

Thanks for all the help. I will take all the info and put it to use and well see what happens. Good luck to everyone this year..
