LAST EDITED ON Dec-12-11 AT 12:56PM (MST)[p]Hello All,

Please give me your best knowledge on 300 Win Mag ammo for Elk Hunting-the last animal I harvested was in 2006 a Desert Bighorn Sheep with a Swift A Frame 200 gr. @ 363 yards What factory load should I use on my Elk hunt.

Thank you-

M

Sounds like you already have a good elk load. A 200 grain swift would be plenty good elk medicine.

Winchester makes s factory load with 180 gr. accubonds that would work great. You could also shoot what you shot last time or even try some Nosler Custom loads.

Shoot em till their dead

I like the Federal Premiums with the Nosler Partition, puts the hammer down on elk. But out over 400 yards its ballistics aren't the best.

I'd use any factory ammo (if I didn't reload) with a 180 to 200 grain bullet. I'd feel very safe using Swift A frame or scirocco, Barnes TSX or TTSX, Noslers in AB or partition.
I'd use any of these 6 bullets because of their ability to expand AND penetrate.

Use the same load for elk that you used for sheep if they shoot well in your rifle. It simplifies things for you.

Zeke

PS: I've reloaded and used successfully for elk; 180 Partition, 168 TTSX, 180 TSX, 200 AB all in my 300 win mag. Currently using 200 AB and 168 TTSX in my 300 RUM.

BTW: I would have tried to use a high BC (BT) 165 or 180 bullet for sheep. You could have even used a more fragile bullet since sheep are not as large as elk.

I think you used an elk load on sheep. Now don't use a sheep load on elk or the outcome might be bad.

Just more of my 2 cent and all for free.

I'm leaning more and more toward the 200 grain bullets for elk but the 180's will certainly work.
My current #1 go to bullet would be a 200 Nosler AB since it has a .588 BC. The bonding and SD makes this a great bullet up close and the streamline design (BC) makes it a long range killer.... Whatever a long shot is for you. Know your limits for field shooting and have the dicipline to stay within your limits.

We're up to 4 cents! LOL

Winchester 180 Grain Power Points!

Yup,you're gonna lose a Roast maybe a Steak but you ain't gonna lose the animal!:D

Hot Dog,Hot Damn,I love this Ameri-can

You can't go wrong with 180 accubonds. Partitions, Barnes TTSX are also great. 300 win. Mag is a great caliber for elk. Watched many bulls fall to it.
Good Luck.

It sounds to me like you already got it figured out. 180-200gr. bullet .300 win mag will do the trick on about anything the most important thing is SHOT PLACEMENT again and again and again until he is down then watch to make sure he stays down nothing worse than chasing wounded elk hammer them til they are dead.

Thank you Sir, for the advice I will let you know how I do. With that advice you sound like a long time friend of mine especially with a name of Crownroyal!!

Best advice yet!

One other bullet I would add to the other great bullets listed is the one I like best of all----The trophy bonded bear claw. I haven't tried the tipped bear claw but I know the old style is a great bullet if they will fly out of the gun you are using.

Winchester XP3. High BC. Awesome ballistics. Most important thing is if it shoots well out if your boom stick. Second or maybe most important, is it a solid bullet?, meaning will it perform like you need it to? That's why I love the xp3.

It was a big bodied 2 point. (this is my signature)

I put a 200 grain accubond into a moose a few weeks back and it sure did the trick. He stumbled around for about 15 seconds then stood up on his hind legs and fell over backwards. Broke off part of his paddle on the impact. I'd say if it did the trick for that moose it would do the trick on any elk. Great bullet!

My son killed his bull with a 140 grain Accubond out of my 270 and it was DRT from about 300 yards... Perfect bullet performance... I would say anything from 180 to 200 gr. will be more than adequate when using Accubonds and a .300... My experience has been that the accubonds like a little speed to fully perform so I would lean to the 180's but I think you really couldn't go wrong...

My experience with elk is that they can really soak up the lead. I like to go on the heavy side. So for elk I use, and have had good luck with, Federal Premium 200 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claws. They really pack a whallop! A little more arc though.

For accuracy my gun also likes Federal Premium 180 grain Accubonds.

Thank you Sir, I appreciate the info, I've heard alot of great things about the Bear Claws & Accubonds.... I will let you know how my hunt turns out!!

Thanks Jodog that seems to be the majority I'm going to get some today or tomorrow and try them out along with some other suggested ammo and see what works best!
