Looking to buy a new gun. I believe you get what you pay for, but don't want to spend money just for name. Looking at maybe the savage or the ruger m-77. Have shot the savage once. Loved the trigger, but the action seemed stiff. Also wasn't crazy about the placement of the safety. The ruger seemed more comfortable to me, but have heard the trigger isn't good. Have never owned either brand. I have had winchester model 70 forever. Are these guns worth buying or am I better off spending a little more for rem. or browning? I know this could be a matter of opinion, but would love to hear any pluses or minuses. THANKS

I like the Ruger I have three of them... seem tough to beat!
I also have some that cost 5 times as much however the M77 in 7mm will always be my back up gun...they are solid, don't rattle, feel good on the shoulder, not to heavy, nice looking
wood. I have had one been run over by a 1 ton truck and it got a very small crack on the fore end by swivel and still held zero to this day. good luck oh you can get in most any caliber!

Savage and Ruger has been around as long as dirt. And they are great guns .The big question is are you after a bolt action or auto.I have both and would not give them up.If you are after a auto go Browing BAR.Now if your after a bolt I like my remington I am not that wild about the browing A bolt it is a great gun but I just dont like it.That is just my 2cents.

I have several Ruger M77 models and a couple Savage rifles. As far as brands go, I prefer the Ruger between the two. Funny story, I have a 180+ class buck on my wall that I can thank Savage for. Hunting on a guided trip in Montana back in 95, I was out with the guide and two other hunters one morning. We spotted a large group of deer moving up a draw and got in position for them to walk past us. Laying in the snow in prone position, I watched the big buck in the group get closer and closer. When he was finally in range the guide told the first hunter with us to take him. We lay side by side and I'm watching through my scope when I hear "click". I looked over and the guy shooting looks at his gun in disbeleif. The guide tells him to load another shell but when he pulled the bolt back, the entire thing came apart. The guide said "Rob, bust his ass" and the buck dropped in his tracks. When all the excitement was over the guy with the broken gun said it was brand new and just purchased for this guided hunt, it was a Savage. I know Savage makes good firearms and in no way am I saying to stay away from them, just thought you might like to hear goes through my mind whenever I think of Savage................rf

I have several of all three. Rugers are super well built and quality guns. Have some older ones and new ones. You save 50-60 bucks just on the super tough rings. Newer triggers are bad and not tuneable unless you replace. Accuracy is steady and consistent. A super accurate Ruger is not the norm. Savage both new and old. Clunky actions with triggers that can be made awesome easily. Super accurate and a tack driver is very common. A Savage is the most accurate gun I own even better then a couple custom built guns. Remington both new and old and they all are quality rifles with good triggers if tuned. Accuracy is above average with more being accurate then the rugers. I have had none of them just fall apart or heard of them just falling apart. Just my opinions based on experiences.

Someone has to stick up for the A-bolt so here I am. Bought my first A-bolt in "89" and have since sold a 2 Rem's and 1 Win and replaced them with A-bolts in other calibers. I like having the same rifle and scope so it doesn't matter which one I'm carrying, they mount the same, safety is in the same place and the sight picture is the same. My .338 and .280 are exceptional shooters, better than me. Oh yeah, all of my shotguns are Brownings too so I'm a lil biased.

Sako

I've got a Rem, Weatherby Vanguard, and Sako. By far, I prefer the Sako over the rest. They are all accurate enough, although the Sako will outdo the others, and I'm not a great shot. But the Sako feels the best, by far the best trigger (the Rem is the worst), the smoothest bolt, etc. I know that Sako's are pricey, but if you stay away from the deluxe model, and you shop around, you can get a fair deal on one.

Just my .02

I have a Remington 700 XCR in 300wsm and absolutely love it. Looking back, I wished I would have just purchased the Remington 700 sps in stainless in 300wsm. My xcr cost $770, but you can get the sps that looks the same for $504. Go to www.walmart.com and type in Remington sps. You can't beat it for the price.

buckdragger!
I'm leary of the Savage... butt I've never owned one.
If yer talking under $500, (rules out a-bolts 'an sako's, both kick-butt guns, but $$$)
I would not hesitate to own (another) Ruger! I have my share.
That Remington SPS should be on yer list too! Great gun! Great price! ( the new SPS heavy barrel is under 500! What a smoke'n deal!)
I think Wally World has Weatherby Vanguards fer under 500...

Fords 'an Chevys! Best Quarterbacks! Ducks or geese! Whitetails or Muleys!

Make yer OWN decision! Get wht YOU want! Don't settle!

I've had several of each in Ruger, Savage, Rem and the Abolt. I prefer the Rems over the others mostly because the triggers seem better out of the box with a good fit for me. That said, I've never had a Savage that did'nt shoot. Plus, a new Rem XCR that I have right now rattles! I love the way it feels and shoots but a rifle isnt suppose to rattle!

Sako

I also prefer the sako, its light comfortable to hold for what seems like forever and its accurate as hell! mines chambered in the 300 ultra mag and i actually only paid $700 for mine at sportsmans, it was on sale from $1300, you can find good deals if you just shop around. I just cant wait til the new 85's come out. anyone heard when this is cuz sportsmans and cabelas have no idea.

I have four big game guns that I have a hard time choosing between any time I head out. One is a a bolt in 270wsm fitted w a dual grip thumbhole from richards I would have to say it is my favorite capable of 1/2 inch at 100YD w a couple of different hand loads.I also have a remington in 280 ackley weatherby mark v ultralight in 7mm weatherby mag but the gun i wouldnt overlook for the money is a tikka I have one in 300 wsm and it is a shooter if your thinking of wsm cal browning is lighter but the tikka seems to shoot a wide range of loads to the same point of impact dont know if this is true of alltikkas but this one is very consistent.
