I read where the High Country Buck-rifle- dates have been moved to Sept. 15th opener after the mzzy deer and elk hunt dates.

HCB units affected are:

Holy Cross Wilderness-44....

Maroon Bells/SnowMass Wilderness--43....

Hunter-FryingPan Wilderness-47

Eagle's Nest Wilderness-36...

I wonder if this will increase the mzzy buck applicants in these units and decrease the rifle HCB applicants..

I would think the muzz demand will increase. Are other areas also affected? Where did you read this and can you post a link?

Thanks.

I was somewhat happy to hear the HCB season changes because it ought to give some of those high alpine bucks that get hammered year after year in the same HCB units a little better chance of making it through the season. I would think with archery and muzzy guys hunting first will alert some of the bucks to what is going on. I have also noticed the bucks tend to go down in the trees once they shed their velvet so may be a little tougher to find?

On the bowsite there were a bunch of archery hunters complaining about the new dates because it likely interfered with the elk rut. I guess not everyone is happy about the changes but I really think it is a good thing.

I'm not exactly sure why this would change the muzzy draw odds because there are usually only 20 to 30 HCB hunters in a unit and they really don't put that much hunting pressure on the deer compared to all the archery deer and especially unlimited archery elk hunters.

Good thoughts.

I would do my HCB code and then do a corresponding bow buck code as a 2nd choice and almost always draw the 2nd choice as it took to many points for the HCB tag...

I would not do the mzzy buck as it would burn 2-3 deer points and I would be starting from scratch...

Now with the date flip-flop... less points maybe for the mzzy buck hunt and hunt first before the big guns come in.... and be able to mzzy bull hunt to!

Just thinking out of the box...sorta ha

I think it was to reduce visibility of hunters to the non hunting hikers over Labor Day weekend. You would not believe the looks and comments I got in the Maroon Bells wilderness when I had that HCB rifle hunt a couple of years ago.
