lets say you have 13 points for elk, what hunt would you put in for and why? you can use all the choices; archery, muzzle loader, rifle, and the unit, looking forward to the feedback

Just Hunt!!!

Good question justhunt with that many points id say rifle but also muzzle might be a great choice ive called big bulls in both those hunts all over utah. I wouldn't use your points on archery its a hard hunt im not saying the rifle hunt is easy you just have a better chance at a bigger bull with that many points just my two cents.

Depends on what your looking for? Do you want a hunt that may be easier with lots of elk, or hunt hard with less bulls but a better chance for a good bull? Lots of elk that may be easier(not easy by any means) would be a rifle hunt on wasatch, a tougher hunt with a better chance at killing a better bull, look at beaver with a muzzy. A good bull could come off any unit tho, just my two cents.

Course it really depends on which STATE you are talking about.

venor, ergo sum (I hunt, therefore I am)

well i am asking about utah, i was just wondering what others might do if they were in this situation, if all you out there had 13 points, what would you put in for and why? so there will be alot of opinions which is fine by me, every one has opinions me personaly, huntinfanatic is in the ball park of what im leaning to!!!

Go archery. A month of the best memories you will ever have! A rifle hunt if you're lucky will last 2-3 day. A muzzy hunt maybe a day or so longer. Even if you eat your tag on an archery hunt, you will have more close up hair raising experiences than you can handle. Monroe is a great archery hunt and doable with your points. I'd share my intel on the unit as well if you draw. Good luck. :)
One more year and I'm back in the elk game!!!

Traditional >>>------->

If I wanted to hunt this coming year I would apply for:

-book cliffs roadless muzzleloader, and get a guide
-dutton early rifle

With 13 points, since I have shot big elk with a bow, I would go rifle or muzzleloader.

Good luck

Try having 15 Utah LE deer and buffalo points and then move to idaho cuz you lost your job, that kinda hurt my odds to draw my Henry's tags :-(

LAST EDITED ON Jan-15-12 AT 01:55AM (MST)[p]First of all, I wouldn't have 13 points for elk because I would have spent them 5 points ago on an archery elk tag. For me, size is NOT everything. I fully intend on getting back into the elk game this year for, hopefully, a short time to 6-8 bonus points. I will then be privy to a LE Wasatch archery elk tag where I will spend my days sneaking through the aspens and pines, surviving on jerky and granola bars, passing smaller bulls and probably eating tag soup again. However, I will have had the best time hunting that I could possibly have be it hunting alone or with friends and family.

Slammy - that should have improved your buffalo odds brotha!:)

It's always an adventure!!!

The way I see it is, you still have about as good a chance at drawing a Henry's tag living in Idaho....slim to none. :)

man!....choices....choices.....choices, i might be leaning towards archery, on the pahvant, monroe, or dutton, im kinda loosing my patients and just want to hunt elk but i dont want to cash in on an archery tag i could of drawn 3 years ago, if i could just kill a bull on a open bull unit, i could might get some patients back ;)

Dutton early is a possibility. Myself, holding out for premium south cache. Close to home and will allow me a little over two months in the field.

I have 12 points. You and I should apply for San Juan together. Pretty much a guarantee to draw as a group. I don't want to hunt with you though.

with 13 points your chances are killer for an early fishlake or dutton. There are a ton of elk on those units. I'd that over an archery tag. If you decide to go archery with 13 points it lowers your chances at a decent bull significantly.

i would put in for the suan juan, but its just to far from home, and cost to much in gas, to be spending every weekend i had out there:( and if elkass is out there i surely dont want to be out there,

IMO i just dont think there are the quality of bulls im looking for on the fishlake, and i know that unit really well, i have family in fremont, and they claim there are alot of bulls but not a bull worth 13 years invested, but then agian you never know, a big freak nasty bull could show up anytime,

I hope I never get 13 PPs in Utah, or any other state for elk. Just too damn long to wait to hunt elk.

Personally, the archery is the best. 4 weeks chasing them is better than one week, in a quality state anyways.

I built 13 PPs in Colorado and ended up going archery just to burn the points. What a blast!!!!!!! Now I hunt rutting bulls every other year there, just not quality bulls.

Since you've invested that long, you need to decide if you want the best or a lesser unit, great hunt and start over so you can draw again sooner. Guess it's your personal decision. Me, at 52, I'll always opt to hunt and not wait.

Fishlake premium hunt all 4 hunts and 360 is possible

If I were you I would take Horsecreek up on his offer, That was the best 3 weeks bowhunting I ever had.Up close and intense with a bow beats any other way to hunt IMO.

I'd either do a top end archery unit or hunt the Wasatch with rifle or muzzleloader. You could draw the Monroe or Pahvant for archery and have a great time. If you don't have very many days to hunt or are more comfortable with a gun the Wasatch has ridiculous numbers of bulls. You can get a decent 330-350 bull if you're patient and get away from the road hunters. Muzzleloader tag could be had this year, rifle might take another year.

At least 15 points for rifle on the Wasatch right now. ML you could get. Archery is a gimme. If it were me, I would burn them on a ML hunt. Those have been the best hunts the past few years, generally hitting smack dab in the middle of the rut.

It's always an adventure!!!

Not sure where ya live but that idea of a Premium tag with your 13 pts might not be a bad idea.

Even if the closest LE elk unit you live by is not one of the big 5 atleast you could hunt allot with all your weapons.

A Premium tag in a unit that offers 2 or more is what I would look at with 13 LE elk points.

Here is another reason to go fishlake like you said you have family in fremont ( i would like to know who they are if you dont mind telling me my dad grew up there and we used to have some land there and still have family over there also) but back to the point they put 3 more premium tags there this year i believe there are 9 total your family could be a big help and you could hunt almost 60 days total

i live in the southwest part of the state, so the conclusion im coming to, i will more than likely put in for a premium hunt, that way i can have the best of 4 hunts, and with my job i'll be able to take time off as needed, according to the draw odds looks like fishlake is deffenitly a good chance to draw, maybe i'll put in for the dutton premium, and take horsecreek up on his offer if i draw the tag

My offer was for Monroe...:)I've only hunted Dutton once. I'd still love to tag along and share what I learned about the unit though.:)
Good luck, let us all know what happens in the draw for you!

Traditional >>>------->

yeah your right horsecreek, that was my bad i ment monroe, im thinkin i will put in for the monroe premium

Just hunt let me know if you draw the monroe i grew up on the unit and woul help ya out if im not busy

And of course it all depends on what expo tag i draw this year too;) thanks for the input and i'll be sure to let you guys know what the out come is.. thanks agian,
