One heck of a mess I have gotten into.......

or rather one heck of a mess I have gotten my wife into, and she doesn't even know it yet.

Anyway, the story is pretty simple. Since Wyoming began their point system I have been buying myself and my wife points and sporadically applying for both of us, but always gaining points. She has always wanted to go on "one" really good elk hunt before she feels she is too old to go. I had planned on applying for unit 100 for her as success was high, terrain was mild and elk were plentiful, BUT, and here is where I messed up, last year I didn't apply for a hunt for her in January as she knew that due to obligations she couldn't hunt the fall of 2011, even if she were to draw, AND when points time came around in late summer,,,, yep, you guessed it, I forgot to apply, stupid, stupid, stupid, is all I can think. I really wanted a good elk hunt for her. As for myself I am thinking units 22, 24, 30, 31, 32, 100, or 111, not really pinned one down, but plan to stick with it until I finally draw, which I think I will draw one of the above in the next five years. But for her I felt like unit 100 was the ticket, due to the several reasons already mentioned.

Anyway, can anyone offer advice for what to do now, maybe what unit to check out. I have seen several questions like this in the past and generally try to avoid questions like this unless it is a last resort, and it seems this situation fits the bill. I mean I believe she could draw a unit 61 (2) with the special fee, but I have been told that the terrain is very rugged and it is in the grizzly zone and I don't believe either of us would be extremely comfortable there as a diy hunt.

I do know there are lots of units that can be drawn with less than max points but from experience there is usually a reason for this. And actually there may be no perfect answer to my dilema. Bottomline what I would like to find is an area with moderate to medium terrain with a good population of animals.Trophy quality isn't as important as hunt quality, but again I may be asking too much given the circumstances, but ANY help will be greatly appreciated. A PM would be great. Thanks to any help with my screw up.

Assuming you're a non resident unit 61 is out of the question.. You must do a guided hunt if you wish to hunt in the wilderness in Wyoming or be accompanied by a resident. Wyoming is heading down the same road as Colorado with the PP game. The top units are only going to get harder to draw with the point creep. 63/64 would be a good one to add to the list also. I think 100 would certainly be a good option, just don't get your hopes up for a monster. 275-300 is the standard bull out there.

Coloradoboy, thanks for the information, but as I was asking for my wife, and now that she is a point behind max, do you feel she will be able to draw unit 100 with one less point than max? As max point drawing success is only about 7 percent, I felt like it would be 10 or more years, if even then, that she could draw a unit 100 tag.

Also, I assume that Wyoming rounds averaged points down, otherwise we could apply together and round up to max points, but I do not believe that is the case.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-25-12 AT 09:20PM (MST)[p]Your assumption on PPs is incorrect in that if you put in with your wife as a party they would use the average and not round up or down. Therefore, you would go into the draw with 5.5 (11 total for the 2 of you divided by 2 = 5.5), so you are still screwed like you said by missing that point for her last year. If you don't have max PPs for a unit like that you are exactly correct that your chances are 0 in the first draw for a long time, but you may get lucky in the random draw that you would then go into, so I would go for it and see what happens if that's the unit you want to take her to. You could also enter her by herself hoping for the same luck.

BUMMER!! for her.

If they still had the unit 75 tags this year, I would suggest that hunt as it is a womans hunt delight.

Stay in Jackson Hole...

Hunt elk in the mornings

Back to the cabin mid afternoon---go shopping

Back to the cabin get ready and go out to a different ethnic dinner each evening.

Repeat! ha

My Mrs loves it and does the RP cow tag now as she is out of points....and doesn't want to get back into the $50 for many more years..

One thought---as ya just never know from one year to the next---how the applicant pool will roll.....

Put ya both in for the same unit but seperate as you may draw a max. pool tag or not and she may draw a random pool tag or not...

If you did say 100 and you put her in for 24 there is that chance ya both draw and oh-boy that could be demanding with you 2 coming from the southeast coast..

Have fun--

Robb

I would hate to be in your shoes when you have to tell her she doesn't have max points this year. Good luck with the random draw.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I counted on Rob to have a brilliant plan and he offered a shimmering hope. I just really can't and couldn't believe it when I went to Wyomings website, for nothing other than points conformation and, WHAT, only 5 freakin points for her. Man, all this point keepin up with can get tough, especially when you are trying to do it for two people on a budget. Atleast she still has 13 points in Colorado, but after following the points there since starting to apply, I wonder if we will ever draw a unit 61, or blackpowder 76 - we may have to move to Colorado to have enough points for her one great elk hunt.

Does anyone have any suggestions for an affordable guided or drop camp hunt - if there is such a thing. And just to be clear, I really don't think most outfitters are too expensive, I mean fuel averages almost $4 per gallon, so that in itself speaks volumes for a $5,000 hunt, BUT, does anyone know of anything around $3,500 with good numbers of elk. That is really my last resort, but I would like to give her, ONE great elk hunt in her life. I have had several, but she has never been along. Thanks again for all your help.

Hang in there! IMO there are some "premium" units that are going to start "dipping" into the less than maximum pools this year, although 100 is not one of them.

I feel sorry for you man but I'm here to help!

So here's what we should do. You can BUY one of my points.

Please send 5000 USD to Mr Iwonttellyourwife in Nigeria.

If we strike a deal I will send you a check for 10K, you put it in your account and rush to get a certified cashiers check for 5K and send it to me posthaste. Upon receipt of your money I'll transfere the point.

Sincerely,
LMAO Zeke

PS; I just did that 2 yrs ago with my wife's Wyo points. OUCH I'm not laughing now!

Man that sucks! Hate to say it but your wife is still aways away from that muzz tag in 76. My dad has 14 and hasn't got any closer the last 4 years due to all the higher points holders jumping in!

Zeke!!! haha

TT---maybe a LO tag outfitted in N.Mex might get her what you would like her to experience?

Or she could go unit 7 in Wyo and there are quite a few outfitters running in 7....

I agree Rob, that was pretty funny. And I have thought of a New Mexico landowner voucher, BUT, my Dad that I hunted with last year is already eager to get back down there and he found a landowner voucher for $3500. Then you have to pay the tag fee and go. It may just be me but I think we would be better off taking her on a private ranch hunt. Cost would be similar - I believe - or maybe a bit less. Trophy quality may not be as good, but there would most likely be unpressured elk.

Maybe I should ask if anyone can suggest a private ranch hunt in Colorado that is around $2000 to $3000, we wouldn't really need a guide, just access to a good property.

Screw Colo and the 290--310 bull harvest for the same cost!

TT--this 'aint' your first Elk hunting Rodeo....ya know...!!

Do your research and if it all falls thru.....or the draw Gods are in a pissy mood come your ......

You and Your Mrs are always welcome in our late date muzzy Bull elk camp here in my home state....

Granted, me and you will be out number by the girls---Mrs. TT & Mrs. PleaseDear & YO-Predator......

But we will survive.....I have anyways! haha

I fill for you. I understand the point and numerous states and the budget. I play the point game for my wife, three sons and myself. It takes alot to keep up and know what to do plus the funds.

I'm in the same boat as yourself with my two younger sons, in that the first year Wyoming went to the point system they were a year to young and I could not purchase points for them. That being said, they are one point out of the max point pool also.

Oldest son has max and been putting him in for 100. I did luck out and draw 100, the second year of the point system and had a great hunt. And yes 100 would be a great hunt for your wife with limited physical demands. Lots of elk, great county to travel by truck and ATV. However, the unit averages between 280-320 bulls, with a few bigger here and there.

Here is a prime example of why preference points aren't a good deal. Miss one year and your hopes of ever hunting the unit you want are basically done.

Missing that one point has basically added an additional 10 to 25 years of waiting (depending upon special vs. regular draw).

RMEF National convention is this week and you can bid on line, during the auctions. There are several elk hunts available, guided and unguided. Past years there are several that go fairly cheap. This year there is also a Utah Book Cliffs Muzzle Loader tag. I bet it will be a sleeper. Great hunt, lots of trophy class elk. Just a suggestion to consider.

Sucks to be you. My wife is also 1 behind max.......and doesn't even know it. My plan??? Once I draw a max PP unit (this year) I jump on the bandwagon with her in the future, use her PPs to get a good (not great) hunt. it may be a lil while but some of the Big Horn units don't require max PPs anymore.

With 13 Colorado PPs, look at one of the later hunts in 61. Do a cow hunt there during 2nd or 3rd season to learn the area and apply her there for that season in the future.
