Colorado Muley - 8 points

I have 8 points in CO. I really want a Big Muley. I am looking for some help and suggestions and heard this is a great site to make contacts. In areas that take 6+ points I am hoping you guys are willing to help since it is not very often that you can hunt the areas due to the wait it takes to build points.

My question: With 8 points and one week to hunt, where should I be applying? Or should I hang on to the points for a couple of years to better my chances. I really want a 170+ Muley.

Thanks!

Draw,

If you are looking for a 170"+ muley than any GMU on the western slope can offer that. No need to waste your points. Plenty of second choice units out there will have what you are looking for.
Good luck

Should I be setting my sights higher with 8 points? What units will be worth using them on?

I would recommend looking up units that take that many points to draw, perhaps some that take less and some that take more, and learning the type seasons the units offer, as well as the type of terrain. This won't be hard to do because there are not that many high point muley units in CO. Then, I'd give a call to the biologists of those units and explain to them the type of hunt/buck you are looking for. This should narrow it down a bit as far as your preferences. The first poster has a point, a 170 buck is possible in many units, but that type of buck on a second choice hunt is not statistically probable. Personally, if I was burning that many points, I would be looking for whopper until the last hour of the last day.

Kory,

First off are you a res or non-res? That changes what you can draw dramatically. I am assuming you are a non-res from your questions.
So if I had 8 points........61 or 21 2nd season rifle. These are two units that are managed for quality bucks. There are so many good units in Colorado though. Look at CDOW website, they have a PDF file that shows the minimum points it took to draw all the units state wide. Keep in mind that the point savings plan from last year is not in effect so the points may shift up or down this year. At least it gives you an idea what it will take. Good Luck
