I had heard that the pauns. is making a come back. I drew a muzzleloader tag back in 93 and it was an unreal hunt. seen a few huge bucks and literally 100's of good bucks. heard poaching knocked the heck out of it. but heard it was on the mend. thought about starting to put in for it again. I know there are always a few monsters down there, but can anyone tell me if it is on the comeback.

93 was the good ol days. We will never see it like that again. Too many people bleeding it for all its worth. In my opinion.

Is the Pauns on the mend? Maybe! It's all about perspective. Fin's correct. It will never be like it was in 93. Too many people making a dollar off the herd. "Conservation" groups bleeding it dry doesn't help either.
How many points do you have? Draw odds are out of site. Expect to wait a lifetime for the tag.

I have heard that Pauns genes were used to bolster the Vernon herd... anyone else heard this?

As soon as you start to hear the Paunsaugunt is coming back, you might as well forget it. Everyone in the country starts showing up to get their piece of it. Then the fish and game starts giving more tags and bingo it's all over again.

Just for kicks, I'll give you a few ideas about the animals I know about.
My taxidermy shop is located in Glendale, which is on the western border of the Pauns. I've been in business since '95. My shop takes in between 90-150 mule deer per year, depending on the year. The biggest bucks consistently come from the general units in Utah, and in the last 3 years from Colorado. I will take in around 20 Pauns bucks, and this year the average buck was a 24" 170 class buck. The smallest was a 18" 4x4, 145, and the largest was a 33" 4x4, 183"

The best Utah general buck was a 37" 196, and a 30" 208" .
Several Colorado bucks over 30, and over 190"
Sonora bucks were smaller this year too! Only one over 30" and none over 190".

When I started my business we would mount 20-25 bucks per year that were over 190" and of those 4-6 would be 200-220" bucks. Now I very seldom even hear of a buck that approaches 220" from the Paunsaugunt.

The Alton CWMU consistently takes good bucks, and I would guess from the ones I see that they average in the low 190's now. With the largest one to come here this year about 214" and 30".
In the 90's they were averaging right at 200" for almost 10 years running.

I don't see it as that great, but maybe I don't see enough of the bucks to really get a true idea of the situation. If I had to rate it on a scale from 1 to 10 with 10 being how it was from 1985-1995, I would have to give it a 5.75.

I hunted the Paunsaugunt on the rifle hunt last year. I made several scouting trips to the area and moved around during the hunt. I saw lots of decent 4 points in the 150-165 range. I eventually shot my buck on the 5th day of the hunt. My deer is not huge but I am happy with the mass and the eye guards. The Paunsaugunt has some good deer but it is not a "premium" limited entry unit in my mind and should not be represented as such.

I believe the pauns is on the bubble. To return to its original beginning when they reopened hunting on the unit will never happen I believe. The only thing I see premium on the unit is what people are paying for the tags to hunt it. I believe that sportsman stepped in at a critical time on this unit and got the tags cut or there would be nothing left. I also believe mother nature plays more of a role on this unit than I thought. Good winters on top and great springs bring great horn growth. Just my opinion. In fact the only thing I do not like about the unit is all the muzzleoader tags that are on the unit each year. 45-50 tags a year does not help the unit rebuild especially when 40% of those tags are guided hunts. With what is taken off the CWMU and Private land during there hunts and then the best of what is left on the muzzle hunt year in and year out I cannot see how the unit can see any consitency in regards to the quality of animals that are taken. Just my thoughts.

Mick,

150-170 bucks..,, Come on down

Both my father in law and his brother both drew rifle tags on the paunsie in 2006. we saw plenty of 24-28 inch deer everyday, however we only saw 2 during the hunt that we figured were shooters and missed both, one was a 28 inch 4x5 with deep forks and great mass, the other was a 7x11 pushing 33 inches and still in velvet, well buck fever took over and both deer went free. the deer are there, theyre just not in the numbers anymore and are alot harder to find than they use to be, as is the case with any unit in the state for that matter.

I would still take a Paun'z tag over the Bookies anyday!!!
I know better....

Yep me to,live not to far from the bookies, haven't seen a big buck out there for 2 or three years now. you've always got that chance of killing a hog down south...

The pauns is nothing like it was in 93. I fear deerbedeads rating of 5.75 may be high.

But Hawkeye's buck reminded me of a buck I got a picture of this summer, could it be the same buck? I think so!

Jeremy-

Where did you take that picture? The eye guards certainly appear to be the same both in size and shape. Your brother Mick was very helpful when I was preparing for my hunt. I spoke with him a couple of different times. Also, your family's restaurant has fantastic food. I made the drive to Kanab on a couple of occasions for Chicken Fried Steak.

Hawkeye,

Shoot me an email at [email protected]. I'll send the pictures I have of the buck in High Res. that look alot better. I would be interested to know where you took him as well. I have been seeing alot of the same bucks in both summer and winter range, almost 40 miles away. It is pretty cool.

Very cool post guys! If it turns out to be the same area, and the same buck (sure looks like it), let the rest of know. No details needed of course.

Hawkeye, never did hear from ya. The picture of this buck was taken, about 3 miles east of Tods Jct.

The buck would have migrated after start of rifle season. Should have been taken at leat 20 miles from the summer pic.

JMHO from Pauns experience.

Conch is right. I shot that buck near Skutumpah Creek. Where is Tod's Jct? I have wondered where this buck spent the summer.

Hawkeye

Todd's JCT is on HWY 89 forty miles north of Kanab. Skutumpah would be about twenty miles South East of Todd's. That's an interesting migration route. Nice buck Hawkeye!

Yep, Same buck. Skutumpah is pretty much a straight shot in between the winter and summer range for many of the deer that summer in that area. Thanks for the fun Hawkeye!
