This will be at the Minnesota River Valley Elk Foundation Banquet on Feb. 18th we will be bolting a Winchester M70 30-06 with Bushnell optics on it.
For future reference I would again like to here what people have to say about the caliber for elk. Would you rather it be something more common like a 300winmag or would you be more apt to bid on a 280 Remington or some other caliber that is a little more unusual? Another thing to consider since this is Minnesota where we pretty much have to travel to hunt elk would you go with a smaller cal say more for deer?

I personally think it has way too much TLC in it to ever take it into the woods and hunt with it. I'd feel bad about scratching it.... especially after someone put that much work into making it look that way.

Selling it at a banquet?
I don't want to piss on your parade.........but I have to agree with Reddog. Cool project for a DIY'r. I think since you put so much work in to it, you will appreciate it more than someone else. I think you should keep it in the family.

Just my 2 cents.

Jeezuz REDDOG. I was thinking it but wasn't gonna say it.

You asked so here goes. Not good. For something like that I would choose a better grade of walnut. The finsh looks a bit patchy and I would suggest more urethane coats with a light sanding with 0000 steel wool between those coats. The white paint makes it look like you used white out. I compliment you on your efforts and keep working at it. Practice makes perfect.

I believe the RMEF guns should be a 300 mag caliber, .338 caliber, or the very least a 7mm Rem Mag.

About 10 years ago, one of the instructors at the local Community College gunsmithing school (Lassen College) did a gun up for the local RMEF Chapter. The gun was beautiful. I don't recall the specifics other than a 30.06 and Mauser action. Gun ended up going for about $2,250.00.

Several of us agreed it would have brought another $1,000.00 if it had been some type of 300 mag or bigger.

I like the leaves, the RMEF crap would make good kindling.

My bone is no stranger to
great envy!

if i had done this myself, i would be proud, but if i was paying money to have it done, this wouldn't cut it.

On the caliber, I think that you can't go wrong with the 30-06, good for deer or elk, ammo is not too expensive, not too much recoil, it is a good caliber for anyone. I like the carving but I'm not too sure about the lettering. It might look better if you could get an actual decal or inlay a medallion or carve the letters into the wood or something. Looks good, maybe you can just sharpen it up a little.

Well I asked what you guys thought. It did sell out the raffle. Either way if you don't like it to put in for the raffle was $20 and you got the factory stock and you could make firewood out of this one.
