I am new to this but am looking for some advise. I have spent alot of time out in the bookcliffs these last few years in early to mid november and have seen some pretty decent bulls. I will have 10 points going into this season. Is it worth waiting a few more years to draw a better tag, or do i take my chances knowing i will draw the book cliffs tag? WHat are some of your personal opinions and what would you do?

The late hunts can be hard, but you know the area and if you've seen bulls that you like in Nov.....then put in. there have been some monsters killed on that hunt. Good luck

I also have ten points and i put in for the book cliffs muzzle hunt.

i am in the books 240 days year work & play .tough hunt late the average i have seen is 5 points killed or small 6 most people are dissapointed.at least one or two locals kill decent bulls but they live out there 10 days before hunt. tough hunt weather huge factor .if snows elk go to deepest hole away from roads.peolple will disagree but i have ben out there for 6 years i would not do this hunt.thanks why

So Why are you going to give me some help on where to scout this summer if i draw my tag? :)

Why nailed it in his assessment of this hunt. Killing a big bull on that tag is TOUGH TO DO. I would take the muzz tag over the late rifle any day. I prefer hunting bulls to looking for bulls. Good luck.

There is no such thing as a sure thing in trophy mule deer hunting.

Why. That really surprises me with the amount of bigger bulls I've seen. My dad and brother both have drawn this late hunt and had some great chances to take some awesome bulls. I agree with the weather though, my dads hunt was an extremely hard hunt due to horrible storms the week leading up to the hunt. We just had to work Alot harder and cover alot more ground. Thanks for the advise, I'm a little lost on what to do..

It does not matter what hunt or unit if you know how to find and kill giant elks year after year like me. Sorry you do not.

Elks is not the plural form of elk. Elk is both plural and singular...you may know how to kill big elk, but you can't type/spell for sh*t!

I would say that if you know the unit and have spent time out there during that time of year to go for it. There have been some toads taken out there. Plus with all of the country out there you probably won't see another hunter. Good luck, let us know what you decide/draw.

If you know the unit and know where bulls are that time of year don't let us talk you out of it. There are some big bulls to be had during the late hunt (just ask Ron Skoronski), but in general they are a lot harder to find that time of year. I personally would still take the muzz hunt over the late hunt, but that is because I haven't had as much luck finding big bulls after the rut vs. during muzz season when they are still making noise and hanging around the cows.

Good luck whatever you decide to do.

I hunted it late and the big bulls will tree up under any kind of pressure, they have no reason to leave cover.
Im sure the big old bulls are much easier to get in the rut hunts

Elksass, I would love to see the giant elks you keel every year:) RVCA, I think you stick with the late hunt, you've seen some good "elks" over the years, and that will give me an excuse to get out of the house and come stomp the dirt with you.

I hunted Book Cliffs Muzzy last year. Definitely a tough hunt. You could tell the elk had gotten some serious pressure from the previous two hunts. I felt lucky to harvest a decent bull. I saw a lot of bulls that were much smaller then mine.
But still a fun hunt...I had a blast!
Good Luck
