i just drew my first elk tag for wyoming. its a general tag so im planning on hunting units 82 or 84 which have a sept.26 opener for rifle. anyone have any tips as far as elevation, rut action that time of year, types of calls i should have/use, or hunting tactics for these areas?

If it's your first time I would skip the calls. If you must, then use a cow call only to stop an elk if you get a shot at one. I would spend a lot of time listening and glassing. JMO

thanks i did buy a primos cow call. but being a rifle hunt i think your right about listening and glassing.

They are usually still doing some bugling into the first week or so of October especially if you can find an area where they aren't being pressured too much.

I agree with Topgun that the elk will still be rutting/bugling, actually you will be there at a great time, bulls will still be carrying on fairly strong with plenty of bugling action. A cow call is a good choice as usual for selective spots but I would definitely have a bugle along for location purposes. You don't need to call bulls in with it you just need them to give away their location, this is so when glassing the semi open to thicker stuff isn't producing visuals. Bugling from vantage areas can easily carry a mile, this means you need to learn to use one correctly before heading out!

Both methods should be considered, versatility could make the difference! Of course you will have to be aware of other hunters hearing you so be mindful of your bugling areas! I personally would seek out areas where few hunters would consider going, with less pressure your odds increase in finding vocal bulls & the less hunting pressure! Good Luck!
