Ryan Hatch has found 3 sets of sheds from this buck. Here is the set 1 year prior to the skull. He put some serious growth into his back end.

If anyone is interested in a set of replicas, send me a PM.

Wow....that's pretty fuggin' amazing! What a buck! Hopefully he died from natural causes and some gut shot.

That's amazing RH has sheds from the last three years on this guy. Your right, he put some serious growth on in his backs.

Looks great after the makeover by the way.

Sweet find!! That is one awesome buck. It does my heart good to see one die of natural causes every once in a while. It makes me feel that the true giants are still smarter than the hunters! Let's hope he got a good chance to throw some of those awesome genes around the past few years! Who said the Paunsagaunt was dead?

I call bs, those antlers are too white, repro.

Think he might have shot that deer in season and come back to recover the antlers?

Antlers are too far apart on that skull.

That hide on the head looks bogus, it should all be gone by now.

I heard he used a chute plane to find those horns and trespassed to get em.

I don't mean to leave any other quality nit picks out but I'm hoping this can be that one post.

Great deer. Love the mass.

Awesome find & a great cleanup job!! Sure would have loved to see that Buck on the hoof.

Thanks for sharing.

What state & general area?

Mark

Great job on the restoration!!! Congrats on the find of a lifetime......

:( Somebody didn't like bouncing betty :(

Colville,
dont get mad just because you are to lazy to go find some horns!!! Yes unlike you, after being dead for over five years, it still has hair on it head!!!And just because your ears are too far apart on your own head dont make it right to dis on this pimp buck!!! And yes the skull is as white as they come its from america!!! UTmonsterslayer does shoot deer in season he is a bad A$$ never has and never will poach in his life!!! Dont get anal pains just because they dont grow this big IN WASHINTONS RESERVATIONS!!! The one and only thing that i will agree on with you is your first three words, and it not because of anything you said!!! this is for sure no matter what a photo-shop picture those horns are 100% real but there is no way that that kids hair is that red definatly photo-shop!!!

this is me

JK i was with steve when he found this always-in-a-liftime find he is the best friend and hunting buddy anyone could ask for!!! thanks for showing me up every time we are out in the hills!!!

UtMS,
That right there is why we shed hunters wear the rubber off our boots. Congrats on a find of all finds!!!

This sucks, now I have to submit to remedial continuing education to keep my sarcasm license. I hear you have to if 2 or more people take you straight. Thanks a lot guys.

Colville,

It's worse than that !!! You must also make a cash contribution to the master.

JB

PS- do you get the feeling that these guys know each other ??

sure I want repro's of a buck I didn't kill or every see alive????? Ya i'd say the bone worshiping is getting a little out of hand.

no, camo doesn't help shed hunting, i just don't like to wear my church clothes out in the hills!!!
as for the "bone worship", is this MONSTERMULEYS.COM???

Yes, camo helps antler hunting where I hunt. I like to add some coyote calling while out. Also, to keep from being noticed, if there are others around. Once again, nice job on a find of a lifetime wether you were in a plane, horse, or wearin' out your rubber!

Great find, you guys that are griping either have little man syndrome or are just eaten up with jealousy.

Or maybe they were being sarcastic, making fun of how people tear down every single big buck posted? Possible? Nah, they were serious. ugh.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-10-07 AT 01:52PM (MST)[p]Awesome find UTms! A little bone worship pays off doesn't it? And I like your shed hunting ensemble. The brown hoodie goes very well with those cammo pants and is a very fitting outfit for the activity. Show me your Rack's cammo doesn't match though. You should get him a green hoodie. ;-) lol

What did ya'll use to turn the antlers brown? I found a winter kill buck a few years ago I would like to clean up. Thanks in advance, CNE

if you get the horns wet, and then sand them, they get real smooth. you can even fill in pretty big cracks like that as well. i used absolutely NO STAIN. it was minwax pre-stain wood conditioner. it is clear. but a few coats darkens them nicely.
hope that's helpful.

Isn't it illegal to take a skull off the mountain? Heard that a while back. I think i gizd my shorts a little seeing that pic!

Ohhh - he's a STRIP buck. That explains it. Ok I take it back. The Paunsaguant is still dead. Who said the STRIP was dead?

Colville - shame on you. I mean, come on dude - you forgot to mention that these guys had 19 guides surrounding the area and blocked off the roads while they were shed hunting and they all were riding quads and they only found the skull because it was a high fence farm raised buck that really died in Ryan Hatch's barn where it lived all of its life (that's how come he has all the sheds) and he took the skull (which as you did mention is a repro anyway) and "hid" it so his crew could go out and "find" it and surround it and then once they had it surrounded they brought in their famous celebrity shed hunter who flew in that morning, walked over to the skull, picked it up, took some pics then flew out that afternoon. You also forgot to mention that they didn't have the proper licenses for their chute plane and that their trucks don't get very good gas mileage and there are too many roads in that area anyway and they also put ketchup on their Ribeye steaks that night back at home while they were celebrating the find.

If you're gonna tell a story - tell a good one! GO BIG OR GO HOME BROTHER! :p ;-)

Roy, you forgot to mention the 10 dollar companion permit that they had to purchase before walking the leather off their boots. I believe those permits are available for purchase at every sage brush flat. Outrageouus find!!

Steve, I would love to come over and see those in person. Maybe you could give me some more pointers on reconditioning antlers and doing repros. I've got a few sheds that need it.

bobcatbessy recognizes sarcasm when he reads it. Plus he's probably too busy to respond unless he's attacked directly.

"Damn"
"Damn"
"DAMN!"

These were my exact words out of my mouth as I saw the first three pics.

Thanks for posting. Great find.

Have you guys ever watched any of Ryan Hatches movies? I remember at least one where his dad, or buddies find a few lion kills. It seems like some of those heads were found propped up on their tips like this one. It makes me think that maybe it's the same "lion" that is killing all of these MONSTER bucks. Maybe this "lion" wants the head to dry out good and not rot on the ground. UTmonsterslayer must have accidently walked up on one of this "lion's" caches. I'm sure this "lion" is out there all year round with lots of helpers trying to find other MONSTER bucks to be his future hard horned victims next fall.

Please don't get me wrong on this. I am not making any accusations. I am simply making an observation of similarity. I have the highest respect for Steve Monk. I'm sure he was just lucky and found a lion kill. But in my opinion, that "LION" has got to be stopped.

Steve, here's a question for you. How exactly do you go about getting a possession permit to keep a lion kill you find? I have found a few and had to leave them because I didn't have a permit and had no idea that such a permit existed. Thanks for the info.

leave Hatch outta this. he is a genuinly nice guy that busts his balls harder than any of us ever will!!! and his succes shows for it! keep your jealousy to yourself. according to the fish cop, this was "obvously" a lion kill. the nose busted off, the spine twisted, the first vertibrae was crushed in on both sides. i think he knows better than you or I.

anyway,
you have to call the F&G and get a permit before bringing it across the border. if it is anything of substantial size, they will probably want to look at the scene, bones, spine, etc. (metal detector if needed). if they find no evidence of foul play, they will you give you a permit to have it.

You're right, my post did sound like I was pointing a finger at Hatch. I wasn't, and I didn't mean it to sound that way. I know he works hard as one of the best guides around and he has a great appreciation for these big bucks. I was just making an observation on how the skull you found, and some of Hatch's lion kill finds were propped up like that. I wonder how they got that way. Was it just a coincidence? Or is it a result of how the animals feed on it? Whatever the reason, I still think that lion (if it was a lion) is killing big bucks and should be stopped.

So, did you call the F&G and wait for them to come out to the site to investigate it? Or did you leave the skull where you found it and call it in when you got back into town?

See, these are the types of details that baffle me. I would have a tough time calling the F&G from out on the strip (no service). I would have a tough time convincing them to come all the way out there to investigate a lion kill. And it would be nearly impossible to talk them into letting me keep the skull. In fact, they would probably try to turn things around and nail me for something like hiking off of an established trail, or speeding on an unmarked dirt road, or not having a current and valid shed hunting license - well, maybe not that one. Ever since I got that warning because I pulled off the side of the road to let a ranger squeeze by on a single track, I've been a little paranoid about dealing with these authority figures.

you have to get the permit before you cross the state-line. not before you take the skull. in arizona, you are allowed to have skulls. in utah, you can't. the permit is called a transportation permit.
you must have got the wrong fish-cop. like everything else, some are awesome, some are pricks. they are just doin their job. sent you a PM.

that thing is way to big to have been killed by a lion i bet it was killed by a kit foX!!! THAT IS OBVIOUSLY WHAT HAPPENED

Congratulations!!!!!

I'm guilty of being a Horn worshiper!!! I do believe thats one of the reasons why I visit this site.

Thanks for sharing guys. What an awesome BUCK!!!

Colville, I'm starting sarcasm offsets. Send me your money, yes all of it!!
