What model would you pick? I will be doing alot of mule deer and elk hunting (archery & rifle)

geovid if I had the money--that way you don't have to carry a range finder---chris

I've used binos and rangefinder and now I use geovids. No question about it, the Geovid is the best choice. You won't be sorry.

The Ultravids have a little better optics are more compact and lighter wieght. for 75% of my hunting I don't need the rangefinder so I prefer my 10x42 Ultravids and carry the rangefinder only when there's a chance I need it. just my 2 cents.

I love my geovids, worth there weight in gold. I not only use the range finder for bow hunting but also use it for rifle hunting. I have owned swarovskis and think that the little bit of diffence in the glass, will not make a difference in the field they are still very high quality glass in theme. Most people would be amazed at the clearity.

Ultravids are a tad bit nicer and gather noticeably more light, but the Geovid has the rangefinder. Still trying to decide myself. I looked at both very carefully, though, and the Ultravids definitely gather more light.

Ultravid has alot better warranty.

My buddy bought a pair of 8X geovid this last year and they were great during hunting season. However he had to send them back to leica because it stopped reading yardage. havent heard whether hes got them back or not.

Geovids, no question.
I have both and the rangefinder is worth a million bucks.

They are great in Mexico for keeping track of bucks out in the thick stuff. When you find a deer just hit the rangefinder button and then when you need to find the deer again you will know the precise yardage to start looking for it again. Try that with a rangefinder on your belt.

I don't seem to see the difference in the quality of the glass from Geovid, to ultravid, to Swarovski. Some of my clients were comparing last year on one of our hunts, and they all thought my Geovids were the clearest, if there was a difference at all.

I was on a bear hunt in Alaska last spring and we had some rough seas one day and my Geovids were on the top bunk in the boat. They got pitched up and hit the roof and then fell off on the floor of the boat. It broke both eyepieces.
I sent them back to Leica and they fixed them at no charge and sent them back within a month.
Swarovski is faster to service broken stuff, but free is free!

The only thing I don't like about the Geovids is the button for the range finder is on the left side, which is on the wrong side for a right handed bowhunter. It makes it tough to reach it while you are stalking with the bow in your left hand. Wish they had it on the other side, or at least would give you an option to pick which side it is on.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-13-07 AT 03:03PM (MST)[p]A buddy of mine owns Big Sky Archery here in Montana, so on light of this post, we went out to check out the Leicas in his shop and took out a pair of Swaro El's and SLCs for good measure. There were about a half dozen of us. And here is what we concluded. There is absolutely no doubt that the Ultravids and the ELs are brighter at dusk than the Geovids and the SLC swaros. ELs and the Ultravids are definitely lighter and more compact as well. Buuuut we all concurred that it would be damn handy to have a built in rangefinder, although the pair we tested the laser square was tilted in the sight picture, which was pretty annoying. Im still a little leary of Leicas short warranty on the Geovids. Personally I am really impressed by Minoxs new HG for the money. But if money were no object I think I would definitely buy the Ultravids, really felt nice in the hands and the brightness at dusk would be hard to beat.

Thats funny my square is slanted a bit also, and I dont like the fact that the button is on the left side either but I make it work. I minimize my movement though by only having to go for my binos rather than both, which is great, and not having to carry a seperate range finder and losing track of it is also great.

I had enough points built up at Cabelas to almost pay for my Geovids. I think they are great. But are they perfect? NO. There are some situations were the read out is hard to see, the button is on the wrong side for me(which is by far the biggest complaint), and yes the readout is tilted---depending on your facial size. I would have a tough time ever going with something different. But if they ever come out with a 10-42 or even a midsize 8-32 with the button on the right side, I will buy one instantly.
