What do ya'll think of this unit? I posted earlier and received no responses but will try again. I have the opportunity to hunt in 181, if I draw, and according to my research, it should hold great potential for big deer. Give a brotha some help!

I just joined the forum, I missed your last post. What would you like to know? For the most part it's winter range, The north part is high summer range but with too much road access it gets pounded hard even by Co. standards. There are some truly outstanding bucks there that live on some truly expensive ranches where the people are truly unfriendly unless you marry their daughter!!! These ranches have boundary fences that can be walked and you could get lucky especially with late season snow. Which season were you planning on and I might be able to fine tune the info. It's only 2 miles from my house so I know it fairly well.

This is an invite hunt on a private ranch, no marriage proposals required,in the northcentral part of 181. We are going to hunt the late season,if drawn. Thanks

Jump on it with both feet. If it's the right ranch you have a realistic chance at 180+ bucks. You might want to take a spare diamond ring with you just in case. If you go the private property tag you will draw check the stats just to be sure but the down side is you can't shoot on the public side of the fence not much of a problem there since everyone will be out there wishing they were you. The public land there is easily accessible and wall to wall hunters except for a few hidey holes. I wish I were you already show me a pic if you score. Be patient it only gets better as the season goes on and the rut picks up. If it's really the right ranch 200+ is very attainable but nobody gets on that one.

That is good news and also I have been informed that for a small trespass fee, I can choose to hunt a ranch across the highway in GMU 27. Which one would you prefer? Both ranches are the about the same size.

When in doubt 2 are better than one. It's all one valley so without knowing the exact particulars of the ranches in question I couldn't say. Never mind on the private land only tag, they aren't offered for the 4th season I was unaware of that fact. P.M me the name of the ranch or owner (include a landmark or tributary creek) so I have more background and I may be able to help you with better info. The public is at the top north end and at the bottom south end so if you are in the middle you are sitting pretty. If this is an every year invite go in 3rd season on the p.l.o. tag you can hunt every year and still build up points. some years the 3rd is really good. Last year it was really bad.

Thanks for the insight. I hope to make it an every year deal but I doubt it will happen. I actually think gmu 27 is where I will apply and hope for the best. Most of the deer I have seen come out of this area are built to score, heavy, long tines, good fronts, but not a whole lot of width. This will be my first muley hunt above 8,000 feet of elevation. Spent some time there snowmobiling last spring and it was awesome country. Stoked.

I think you are making a non issue the tag is good for 181+27 the only issue is whether you wish to cough up the cash for tresspass. I think you are mistaken on the genetic tendencies for this county. We have a short main beam trait here which just kills the score with a side trait of weak fronts. Be sure you see the side view before you pull the trigger or you are setting yourself for shrinkage. Don't misunderstand me some bucks have it all but we get a lot of big heavy 3pts- I just picked up a set yesterday that is a perfect example 160" 3pt w/brows. Almost always they are lacking the front fork but many have 17.5-19" g-2'sw/10"g-3s Anything with better than 22" main bm is exceptional. I'll do a little reading and figure how to show you some pics. I just joined and have a digital disability.
