I was wondering if anyone had information on any of these units for archery elk and deer. Are they over the counter for archery elk? I have 8 elk points and I want to hunt unit 10 so I probably need to wait a few more years so I am looking for an over the counter tag where I can bow hunt elk. Also I may or may not draw my prefered deer unit with my points so I am looking for something to put in for as a second choice that won't use up my points for archery deer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I hunted 61 last year, 2nd season rifle. It takes about 11 point with a bow to draw for Elk, but if you do, you will have a hunt of a life time. I had a deer tag and a cow tag, I got a nice 5x4 27" buck, body was a hog. everyday I could have take a 6x6 Elk I seen at least 50 5 and 6 point bulls, one morning my brother came down a ridge and called me on the radio, and said take a look at me. he had 10 bulls within 40 yards of him 5 were 6x6 and the rest were 5x5's it was unbelievable. I know you could get a tropy, there it would take some work get it to the truck, but you could get a nice bull with a bow in 61. I could have got a cow everyday but wait for all our deer tags to be filled, and on the fourth day had to take my brother to the hospital he got namona if I spelled that right He was more important then a cow elk.

MT, it took 14 points for an archery tag in 10 last year and 16 in 2. With the 80/20 split, you'll be waiting a long, long time.
I have 13 points and wish I'd burned them last year when they were point banking and I could get 2 good hunts out of those points. I did the math yesterday. I want Unit #2 rifle. All 16 pointers drew last year, 13 with 15 points, 13 with 14 points and 33 with 13 points last year didn't draw. Thats 60 guys in front of my group with 13 points that didn't draw. At 5 NR tags a year after the 80/20 split, it'll take another 12 years til I'm dangerous and then I'll have to compete with others with the same amount of points. There are 100's each year that only PP it and no telling when they'll enter the draw. I have a buddy that tells me every year for the last 5 that we could be drawing a good archery hunt every other year and now we've missed 3 seasons chasing rutting bulls with our bows. After Tinytim's post, we might revisit that subject especially since I have enough points to draw 3rd rifle deer, I think. Chase elk for 2 weeks in the rut with my bow in 61 while learning the country and then come back to take a buck with some knowledge of the area. Uhmmmm?
