LAST EDITED ON Apr-15-12 AT 09:04PM (MST)[p]I bet not may of you have gone fishing and and ended up coming home with elk. Well a coworker of mines brother inlaw did. He was out ice fishing this past winter. While using his underwater camera he saw something that looked like a an elk rack.

These are the pictures from when it was in the water.
They spent two hours drilling holes in the ice to get them out.

These are pictures after the rack had dried out for a day or two. They are going to have them dated by a guy here in Minnesota that dated a rack that was found a few years back. I have not hear from this coworker as to what or if they had found anything out. When he first sent me the pictures he was told that they are between 150 and 200 years old. Hope you guys like the pictures.

That's awesome! Would love to hear the results if he gets back to you on exactly how old the rack is. Hell of a story to tell around the campfire, that's for sure!

Gonna have to throw that one back!

He's got a broken G-2!:D

It's been a long hard ride
Got a ways to go
But this is still the place
That we all call home

Great photos and story. My only question is how did they retrieve them. Strip down for a cold swim or snare them??? Looks cold!!! Thanks for sharing.

My guess is they some how snared them. I could maybe see if he had a rope in his truck that with the camera he could have wrapped it around the G3's, but your guess is as good as mine for now. I will ask my coworker.

What are the odds that they picked that exact spot to do some fishin?

I'm with STTM though, his fronts are a little weak and he's busted his G-2.

That ain't a camel toe, that's a moose knuckle!

That's pretty cool. Who would have thought.

Definitely would be interesting to hear how long those things had been down there.

Thanks for sharing. It's a post like this that keeps me coming back.

That's my kind of fishing! I'd go more often if I thought I could get results like that! LOL
Cool story.

That is pretty amazing!

HOOK 'EM!

That is a really neat deal and a super way to mess up a good fishing trip.

Before you die.....Take time to live

the chick looks like she's got a smokin' hot body on her. you got anymore pictures of her?

the elks pretty sweet also;)

So my coworker got back to me about this tonight and he said that some society was going to pay for the dating for the antlers, but when they found out how much it was going to cost they changed their mind. So my coworker said that his cousin is still trying to find somebody to do the dating of them. He is going to check with some of the universities. They know that the antlers are at least 150 years old because that is when there were last elk in the area. The guy that has them is going to have them mounted. He is hoping to connect with a cow this fall and us that for the cape.

I don't want to P!ss anyone off ,BUT they could of be thrown in that lake 5 years ago or 150 years ago, So you really wouldn't know until they are data tested for age. Ask F&G to help in getting them tested, they should be curious on the age of them.

I would'nt think bone could last that long under water with all the bacteria eating at it. My bet would be someone threw them in there not too long ago. Possibly a poacher getting rid of evidence or a pissed off wife?

If it is indeed 150+ years old, this is probably the coolest post of the year minus the comments about seeing a 12 year old girl. It looks like the real deal by the pics anyway.

Pretty amazing stuff.

Bone can definitely last that long underwater. I work on the Missouri River in SD and we routinely find bison skulls underwater and have found a couple of similar elk racks/antlers.

Remember the elk that was found in the sink hole a few years back. A guy was out walking around and found two inches of antler sticking out of the mud. He then proceeded to dig it up and found the rest of the elk. I think they figured the elk to be over 50years old if I am not mistaken.

This has my vote for best post of the year!

"The guy that has them is going to have them mounted. He is hoping to connect with a cow this fall and us that for the cape."

Rum tell the guy that he would be much better off just buying a cape than mounting it on a cow elk cape, in fact it wouldnt work at all, or it would look ridiculous...

He whould be able to pick up a cape for under $150.
