Ever returned a tag? Ever withdrew an application?

Have any of you returned an elk tag after drawing in one state because you drew a LE tag in another state, later that year?

Also, Did you get your tag fee back?

Looking for some legitimate answers. I'm in a delima!

LAST EDITED ON Apr-20-12 AT 06:25AM (MST)[p]I withdrew my Wyoming antelope app last year with max non resident points. I had drawn Utah l.e. archery elk as a resident. I got back all but 20 dollars or so(app) fee. You get your money back because they charge your card up front.

I also turned in an antlerless elk tag one year in Ut. I got all back but my app fee. You only get money back if you turn in your tag by a certain date. It is pretty early though.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-20-12 AT 06:33AM (MST)[p]What states are your tags good for, as each state is different? Wyoming does not allow you to return a tag for money back unless you have a serious health problem with a Doctor's letter and then it almost has to be a life threatening situation. You can withdraw your application in Wyoming before they have the draw (last day is June 3 for deer and antelope this year)and they will refund all but the $14 application fee.

New Mexico , Utah, Nevada.
Specifically if I withdraw from the New Mexico draw, will I get my $760 back if I withdraw brfore the actual draw?

GOutes,

Unless you are a resident of UT with lots of points and you know you are going to draw the LE tag you applied for or a resident of NM and put in for an easy draw elk tag I would think your odds of drawing more than one LE elk tag to be extremely low. Even if you have 18+ points in NV there is no guarantee you will draw a tag though you would have a pretty good shot at one especially if you are a resident.

Without knowing your point totals in NV and UT, your residency in each state, and the actual LE tags you applied for, and the particulars of your delimma, it is hard to answer your question or provide practical advice.

Unless you are pretty confident you will draw the UT tag or have tons of points in NV, I would leave your app in the NM draw. In the unlikely event you draw NM plus a tag in NV and/or UT you can turn in the NV or UT tag and still get a point although you will most likely lose your tag fees in NV and UT if this occurs.

Specific answer to your question on New Mexico: The G&F website says you can withdraw and they will keep your application fee and refund your license fee that yuo paid sometime in May. Hope that helps a little! PS: That's basically exactly what Wyoming does up to a certain date each year, as I mentioned earlier.

Like Horniac said.

I apply for 50+ tags a year between myself and the wife. My last concern is having conflicts. I break my draw odds up like this:

I know I'm going to draw tags based on historic PP totals, Wy,Co, CA, Ut for lack of a better term "Top PP holder pool"

I should draw tags: This is Nevada, not a guarantee, but pretty likely

Surprise tags: I've drawn 1 surprise tag in my life. Basically a tag I applied for instead of just preference pointing it.

This year I drew Wy elk. Since then I've applied for hunts/species that wouldn't conflict with elk rut dates. Or with the guaranteed Wyoming antelope hunt I applied for. So I'm locked up 9/14-10/22. Pretty much have to PP other elk applications. Only late deer hunt applications. My exceptions to this are Nevada California Bighorn and Utah moose. 2 tags I'd make happen even if I had to eat the Wyoming tags.

My advice, let the draw gods settle it for you.

I drew a Duttom muzzy elk tag a few years ago and sent it back. Got a refund plus my points. Hoping to draw a San Juan tag sometime in the next 25 years...

I returned a limited entry CO archery elk tag a few years back because I drew a better archery elk tag in SD. I had to choose between keeping my preference points and getting a tag refund. I kept the points.

Between my two teenage sons and myself we apply for about 100 tags/points each year. We hunt with archery muzzy and rifle to help spread out the seasons. Last year we turned back two tags. My dad and I returned our Colorado unit 76 archery elk tags after waiting 9 years to finally draw again, and my 15 year old son returned his Colorado early season (high country) deer tag. Dad and I forfeited our tag fees to keep our nine points and my son got to keep his deer points and the tag fee since he drew the deer tag as a second choice. Usually we don't have a problem of doubling up on hunts but last year we drew several "suprise" tags inclding two NM muzzy antelope tags, NM youth ibex, Colorado Mountain Goat, and NM unit 16D first rifle elk tag. The ibex, mountain goat, CO early deer, and CO archery elk all fell on top of each other so we returned the CO deer and elk tags.

In some states like CO and WY we know when we will draw but in others it is a suprise. We usually have a contingency plan in place ahead of time in case we get lucky and draw one or more "suprise" tags that fall on top of our "known" tags.

Well thanks everyone for the great advice. I'm gonna sit and wait to see what happens in May. I would be shocked if I drew in NM and Utah/Nevada. If I did, I guess that would be a good "problem" have!

When I returned my Utah LE Bull tag a couple years ago they gave me the option to get my points back, or get my money back. One or the other. Later I was told that I surrendered it to late or I could have got both back. I can't confirm that though.
