Thinking of putting in for eastern oregon mule deer. The units I am putting in for are w mt emily, and malheur river. Any info or suggestions would be great. I am a western washington hunter so I dont need a huge mule deer. would like to get a deer with a chance at a good one. I have hunted in the mapuin unit for a few years and want to change it up. thanks Jack

How many points do you have? both of the hunts you have there are ok, that's about as good as it gets here.

Jackjr, you do realize if you put two choices down, you don't have any chance of drawing the second choice?

I am still trying to figure out why a western washington hunter wouldn't need a huge mule deer???

I know that 2 points will draw both tags. I was wondering if one unit was a better choice

Much of the Malheur unit is open sage and juniper country, most of Mt. Emily is timbered mountian country. they're both ok hunts so I'd let the type of country I liked to hunt be the main factor.

The west Mnt Emily is ok but the cats have really did a number on the deer. I would look into the Malheur, I think the unit holds a better population.

I agree with whtelk Mt Emily is pretty tough going for mule deer. Numbers are way down and very few bucks. I bear hunt in the fall in that unit and just in the last 4 years thers has been dramatic drop in the number of big bucks that I would see. not very many does either. I was going to put in for west mt emily but after talking to a friend of mine who hunted it last year no way. He hunted hard and never even saw a dee for the first three days. So pick another unit that has less cats and more deer. Goodluck

Good luck with that, if you find a unit with more deer than cats those of us who live in eastern Oregon would love to know where that is.

before you put in for mt emily research the pine creek unit in eastern oregon. I have seen some decent bucks over there hunting on the idaho side of that unit. it is steep country though, if that doesn't bother you too much it might be worth checking out.
