New Mexico Guided Elk Draw

I'm in. The good part was the refund option. No tag no pay for license. One thing that I noticed that was different, out of state outfitters couldn't guide in New Mexico. Latter I was informed that they won a court case and could guide. But not all of them. Hopefully all those 3000 were in the unit I applied for. Good luck and happy hunting.

mickeyelk---They can guide in NM, but the law was changed such that they don't get any outfitter tags in that pool that is open to both residents and NRs.

Topgun. I hope thats not true, since the outfitter said they had won the court case, and his gave me his outfitter number to assign to the application.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-30-12 AT 10:00AM (MST)[p]The only NR Outfitters that "won" were the "non corporate" entities as the law they sued under relates to individuals. The Corporations that were party to the suit were not allowed to apply clients in the outfitter pool. I believe there were 5 LLC's and individuals allowed in.

Yep on all of the above. It changed who we applied with, wanted to go one way, he was in limbo, so we went another way. I think we'll be happy either way if we can draw a tag though!

Just wondering why you wouldnt consider a local Outfitter rather than a out of stater. Help the locals and they'll help you get tags by supporting bills and laws that keep you NR coming to new mexico. If you are taking money out of there hands they are going to do anything to keep tags out of your hands.I read a study that shows 80% of landowner tags go to out of staters and of the 20% that are kept in new mexico. JUst my in put.

arent you the guy who thinks the oilfields are gonna mess up your hunt???????????

I dont ever recall saying that stinkystomper...It was a honest qustion based off of what i read from posts last year of that unit. I think i still have the right to ask qustions without stinky hunters thinking they know it all.

Some of the top guys out there operate in multiple states and a few reside in AZ and guide in both. That said, I think its about half and half in the Gila. Of the top 5 or 6 services, half are born and bred, half operate multiple locations.
