Drew a 3rd season archery elk tag in 16B-anybody hunted the unit before? Any comments or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

the 2 fires have grown into each other sometime earlier this afternoon. its not looking good. its very dry and has been very windy.

Makes for easy scouting when half the unit is burned up:) All jokes aside you can find plenty of elk on the edges of the unit within easy walking distance from the roads. This unit has been my first choice for the last 5 years and I don't have horses. If you can walk in one mile you will be in elk. That is if it isn't all toast come September.

fire is currently at 70,578 acres and 0% contained...winds will be bad this weekend...hopefully it doesn't get any worse, that is some awesome country down there...

I do realize its all wilderness- have hunted tough areas before.
Has anybody ever hunted the east side of the unit east of Rd 150-Diamond Creek area?

There are elk in the Diamond Creek Side but they all get a lot of pressure because all the four wheeler and everyone that wants easy access wants to hunt there. You will still find the elk in there though.

Where did you hear that rumor from? Looking at the burnt area online, I see there is the whole east side that remains unscathed. Does anybody know what is standard protocol should they have to close hunting in the unit?

dude its closed. You are gonna have a tough time finding an area you can legally hunt in now. Go to the NM site and read the thread I started called "glenwood fire" there are links to pages describing the exact closed areas but that unit is gone. They closed most of 16a and the fire is still burning. I was going to buy some landowner tags for 16d but parts of that unit are closed as well and the fire isn't out. Its now the largest fire in the states history.

Good luck with your hunt. Its only a $5,000 fine if you get caught in there. just consider it a trespass fee if you get caught as a closure is stupid in my opinion.
