I finally drew out for my LE elk tag and am beyond excited....I have put in since I was 14 and finally got the successful! I am a 4th grade school teacher and my students were just as excited as I was! I hope to find a great bull to bring home! It certainly has been a dream come true! My almost four year old hasn't stopped practicing his elk calls since I came home and told him....gonna be a special hunt!

Congrats. Sounds like you better have on little 4 year old by your side when the action happens, or you're going to have one upset little kid!

Congrats! We will probably be seeing you on the Mountain as my Dad drew this tag also. It took him 12 points to draw. Should be a very memorable hunt. Anyone on here have this hunt last year or know of someone who did? How did it go last year? Curious as it seems the rut hit perfect for the smoke poles last year in other units.

I helped a guy last year with a pahvant muuzy tag. It was a tough hunt but he ended up with a very repectable bull. There are still great bulls on that unit but its not like it was several years ago. Good luck hope you guys get a good bull. A liilte time on that unit and you can do well.

HNTNFSH thanks for the info. Any pictures of the bull? Does anyone have any success pics of the muzzleloader hunt they would share? I am very curious to see the quality of bulls taken on this hunt. Thank you

My buddy finally drew the Pahvant muzzy tag and we will be down on the mountain this fall as well. My old man was one point behind my buddy and is hoping to draw next year. I have been deer hunting this unit for 25+ years and the elk always seem to be rutting hard during the muzzy hunt.

I have been hunting deer on the Pahvant for the last three years and love the country.....only thing is I have only been on the south end. I have a buddy who has been on the north end hunting with family quite a bit (LE elk tags). His aunt shot a massive bull about three years ago and rumor has it that a guy shot a 390 bull on the south end where I deer hunt......I am so excited for this hunt and can't wait to spend some time on the north end.

Yeah there was a 390 bull killed last year and it came off the south end. If I heard right it came off the missiouri flat cwmu. There are some great bulls on the south but also a lot of young rag horns that 1 day could be another giant bull

my dad also drew this tag took him 16 2 should be a fun hunt i helped a guy last year hunt it was a blast

You will have a fun hunt. hope for cool weather though, I shot my bull and it was 92 degrees and ran out of water while quartering it up like a mad man in fast motion to get it into the shade hanging in bags.Never was so worried about dehydration in all my life like that. Saved every bit of meat due to some very nice deer hunters who were camping near me that had horses and offered to help bust through a maze of oak brush to get it hauled out.
Great guys indeed.

Schmalts, That's because you decided to shoot your bull down in the wasteland of the Pahvant. If you would have stayed up high where we talked about, you would have had plenty of water :)

I shot my bull down in the very bottom of a very, very, very steep canyon. If it weren't for the gushing springs all over that area, I would have probably died in there. That is steep country getting in shape is critical.

PSC,
Both the Southern end and Northern end can both be great. The terrain is much more forgiving down South, but because of that there are more people. All the guides tend to hunt down there because the clients are usually fat or old dudes. having said that there are also some dang good bulls taken down there every year.

I personally like the Northern stuff. It's absolutely gorgeous up there and there are plenty of bulls as well. You can see my hunt in the 2010 hunt challenge forum, there are a bunch of pics in there.

Good luck down there!

las year there was not 1 muzzy bull hunter where i and a friend was hunting intel later on in the hunt but the deer hunters are what showed up like crazy but still was a great hunt! cant wait to do it again!

HJB.....I have looked at your posts and pictures many times of your 2010 adventure.....that is one cool story! I want to really explore the north end this summer because I haven't been there at all....I am pretty familiar with the south end....any suggestions on where to start on the north end....I have plenty of trail cameras ready to go and would like to get them set up soon! Thanks for all replies! I am looking forward to a hunt of a lifetime!

Hey PSC_bears17,

Just to wet your whistle, here's one my wife shot down there with a rifle.

Good luck man!

Wow great bull....was it taken on the south or north end?my buddy has had his aunt and uncle take some nice bulls on the north end......they had huge mass, I'm talking lousiville slugger type mass! I've heard a lot of Katherine's and broad canyon....on the south end I have hunted deer in corn creek and goat springs.....saw a lot of elk in there last year.

We hunted the North end until we got snowed off the top. I left 2 travel trailers there until after the hunt because of the snow and mud. The weather totally cancelled the first day of the hunt because of a blizzard. We slugged it out on top for the first 3 or 4 days.
We then moved to the South end and she shot her bull on the 7th day of the season.
Good luck!
Zeke

'06, so it's been a half dozen years since she shot the bull, come this hunting season.

My friend hunted there last year and found some whoppers but couldn't close the deal with his bow. He finished with his rifle on a great bull. Sorry, I don't remember his bull's score. (premium tag)

While the big boys claim the huge bull numbers are down, you can still find them in huntable numbers. You should have a great hunt!

Zeke

PS: are you getting excited yet? haha

I guess I am a little bit excited.....I have heard a little bit about some Coca- Cola land, that if you go into Richfield you can buy permission to go onto the land and hunt....anybody know anything more about this?

Get in touch with Fred Christensen @ Richfield Coca-cola, he will sell you a trespass permit for the property they have on the south end...Later, L.T.

It depends on the year...It actually borders the Missouri Flats CWMU, so you will get animals crossing back and forth...We have hunted that country for many years and have harvested some smoker bulls in that area...During the rut there is a ton of activity on the coke property and the public ground to the south and east...you have drawn one of the best tags in the state, so make the most of it...Above all else have a great time...
Later, L.T.

Thanks L.T. I appreciate all the help and advice! I met a gentleman that works for Safelite glass and is out of Nephi...We got to talking and said that he grew up in Richfield and hunted the Pahvant a lot for deer....I wish I could remember his name! He was the one that told me about the Coke property before i even drew out for elk.....He was a good guy. You draw a tag like this and it feels like a once in a life time.....I am so nervous but just need to calm down I know!

There's no need to pay a trespass fee, there is a ton of public land on that unit with bulls all ove rthe place. Access to public land is the last thing I would worry about. Getting to know the unit should be #1 and getting in shape is #2.

HJB just hit one out of the park! Perfect advice!

PSC_bears17 what is your definition of the north end? It seems a lot people refer to the Chalk creek area as north. Geographically, Chalk creek is more centrally located. I would look at Ebbs, wildgoose and wide canyons as more north. It should be a good hunt for all the muzzy tag holders as their are only 11 muzzy tags, 2 premium and maybe a couple expo tags or auction tags. That's a lot of area to spread only a few hunters. Good luck to all.

I was down last weekend though an noticed the water flow is down substantially from last year. Water may very well be a valuable assest this year for this hunt.

a few Elk hunters BUT a ton of deer hunters will be on the same mountain at the same time.

With the new micro deer units there is only suppose to be 340 deer hunters chasing deer with a muzzy.

I was down last Saturday and it is extremely hot and dry. I was only at the 7,500 foot level and did not see any elk or deer. I was primarily checking on water sources.

Psc_bears17: here are a few of my aunt's bull.... 2008

Scored around 360, but has more mass than most can handle...

I remember seeing that bull in person at the expo two years in a row now. I always stare and drool for a while. I think my buddy at Antler Addiciton mounted that big boy. He was telling me the antlers weighed like 50 pounds or something. Awesome bull! Just out of curiosity, how old was he?

What a beast! You have to see this mount in person to really see the amount of mass this thing has! What a true brute!

I love how the base's on that big old bull are pretty much connected.. it's just one big bone growing out of the top of his head!

Yes it was Antler Addiction that mounted the bull for us... The bull was either 6 or 7 years of age.... i can't remember exactly... i wanna say 6.... Not as old as one would think though...

Went back down to the Pahvant on the 23rd. I can sum it up in one word, DRY!!!!!!!!!!!. It was hot as H#$% and very dry. Nothing else worth reporting. Got there a little late and everything was most likely bedded due to the heat. Saw some recent tracks in the area we were looking. Mostly just checking new water holes and their surroundings.
