Does anyone have any experience with this combination? I just purhcased a Tikka T3, laminated .270 in SS and the VX-III 4.5-14x40mm and am curious as to how well the range indicators match up with the ballistics of the .270 Winchester.

I have a similar setup. Mine is a 7MM Reg Mag with the same scope. In general, the range indicators don't match up exactly with the ballistics. I kind of liken the set up to a bowsite. I use the tic marks much like I would sight pins for longer range shots.

I have that scope on my 300 WBY and my brother has it on his 300 Win mag. It is not perfect, but it is deadly. 4 deer and 3 elk in 2 years. Yardages for harvested deer were 160 yards,300, 310, 404. Elk ranges were 100 yards, 496, and 564.

I use that scope on my Rem 700 ADLS in 300 WinMag. I love the scope, but through out the manual's idea for sighting for a 180 grain round. The trajectory of the 150 and 180 were so close that I used that setting the manual used for the 150. I've had no problems. This last season all of my shots were at 350-375, laser reading, and were spot on. I've not tested beyond 400 b/c I never really had the time with only a week to go home for hunting and there was no place in SoCal to do it. Now I'm in the Salt Lake area. Looks like lots of room for tests.

I have the exact setup as the person that started this post but I use handloads. I found that the reference marks don't line up like Leupold said they would but if you sight in like the alternate way they describe in the manual it works out perfectly. Sight in main crosshairs at 200. Move target to 500 then shoot main crosshairs at the target at 500 but let the bullets fall down where they may (don't compensate). Then drive back out to the target and color in a big dot where you're 3 shot group landed that you will be able to see from the rest. Go back and hold the main crosshairs on the dot you aimed at and turn the magnification ring until the corresponding crosshair is lined up with the big dot you colored in and this is where your scope needs to be for all the crosshairs to hit where they are supposed to.

It may sound complicated but it is not. It works great and is the only scope I'll buy from now on. By the way, if you do this at 400 instead of 500 it works fine also. Also, mine happens to fall all the way at the end of the magnification limit is perfect but if yours is not you need to put a mark on the scope where it is right so you can always go back there.

So if I understand you correctly, the only way for have all the range indicators dead on,( assuming you use the manuals instructions) you must have the magnification fixed at one power all the time? I guess in theory it should not matter much because at distances > 400, your probably maxing out the magnification.
