LAST EDITED ON Jun-21-12 AT 03:35PM (MST)[p]Thought I'd share with you a pic of a cow elk I saw in Yellowstone several years back. It was early spring and I thought that I was watching a small bull...until a calf came up and started suckling (Let the inappropriate MM humor rip with that one). The nursing lasted a while and was not quite right on my senses...kind of like watching a Siegfried and Roy act. I gave a call to a Park biologist and he told me right where I must have been before I could even finish the story. They'd been aware of the cow for a while. She/he was living along the Madison River, about half way between the West entrance and Madison Junction. Sorry the pic sucks...taken with an old 35mm film camera.

I've heard of Does with antlers before. I believe that is why some states designate deer as antlerless and antlered to avoid legal issues if you shoot a doe with antlers. I have never however heard of a cow elk with antlers. Pretty cool pic

There was a cow with antlers that wintered on the Jackson Elk Refuge about 10 years ago. Refuge made a big deal about it

LAST EDITED ON Jun-25-12 AT 02:52PM (MST)[p]Back in 2002 I killed a cow with a 4x4 set of antlers, really threw me for a loop when I went to field dress it. LOL It had the look of a bull though lighter in color thick dark neck with just the female parts.

That would have been a tough proof of sex case if you had to pack that elk out!

I have a friend who shot a doe whitetail with a perfectly slick head and had a nice penis and testacles, did a double take on that one too.
