PP system that works

I have been reading Naildrivers Cali Question. and I have to say that prefreance point system that works for everyone is Neveda's.

Colorado the person with the most points get the tag.
California Same way but a slim amount to the lowest random number. Same with the others. I will give you a senerio

My grandson in 12 years puts in for a Colorado unit 61 tag, he will never in his life draw that tag. each couple of years it adds a point. 15 for elk right now when he can hunt it will be 30 ponits needed, thats 30 years of appling he will never draw.

Nevada's system If he draws the lowest random numder, he gets a tag even if I had 5 ponits which gives me 25 random numbers, if his random number is lower then my 25 he gets a tag. I think this is the only fare system to everyone. Yes you have to buy a point but it is still better then never getting a tag.

I have drawen Nevada two years in a row with 0 points and last year I had 2, my brother had 6 points and we appied for the same unit. So a first time hunter can still draw a good unit.

What do you all think?

Agreed, I like NV's system the best. If all the states used this system, a guy could draw a tag or two every year somewhere. I'm old enough to never draw a decent CO tag. AZ is not too bad of system except for the most sought after tags. Twenty percent go to max point holders, the rest go to the random draw and you get one number for each point. Plus you can get a permanent loyal point and a hunter ed point, so every year you go into the draw with three chances at a low number. As a non-resident, you will never draw the most popular hunts unles you are in the max point pool, but other than that you can draw every few years.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-19-07 AT 01:28PM (MST)[p]Idaho and New Mexico have the best points system the way I see it.....

I just looked on the net, how does Idaho's point system work? always got an OTC tag.

well im from NV so I might be prejudice, but I agree nevada has the best system.
If everyone in the draw has a shot at drawing, even if its a small chance, then that's better than having no chance.
If you've got 14 points squared then you've got much the advantage, but the 12 year old still has a chance.
If it took 30 points to draw, how many hunters don't bother putting in.

We also have the youth tag in Nevada my brother drew first choice every year he was eligable and they were very high quality tags his shooting was another story, but it was a great oppertunity to hunt an area that would take 10 years to draw in the general draw,

FYI: Nevada does not have a Preference Point system. It's a bonus point system. Big difference.

For Youth- can't beat Idaho's mentoring system

For Systems- I like Wyoming's. 75% of tags to point system and 25% system to a general draw. Gives those with max points the advantage they deserve, yet still gives opportunity to those just entering the game.

Utah's isn't that bad either- everyone has a shot and max pt holders get an advantage too.

Tiny, I just said the same thing you did on the other thread before i read this. Nevada's the best in my humble opinion, Wyoming close behind.

I've hunted Nevada 8 times (7 deer/1 antelope)in the last 22 years as a NR and that includes my time out time for speed goat and 2 years I didn't complete the hunter harvest an had to sit out. They made it better when they allowed you to mix and match different weapons. Harder now with the online-CC process.

I've applied for a late mule deer hunt in Idaho with 1/12 odds every year since 92. 0 for 15. Whoops, I've got 15 years worth of Idaho Non-resident hunting licenses to show for my efforts. BUT IT IS WHAT IT IS so you play every game although the rules are different and they can change. (COLORADO 80/20 SPLIT!!!!)

One benefit of point systems like CO where the tags go to the max point holders is that you can plan far in advance when you will be going on a hunt. This gives you a chance to make adjustments in your other appplications to avoid drawing tags with overlaping season dates.

I know there is a big difference, That's the point. The bonus system works for everyone. The PP system only works for the person with the most points. I just feel that the new hunters, kids and adults just starting need a chance to draw a good unit.

Maybe I'm wrong, I just would like to see everyone get a chance at great hunt in a great unit.

Thanks Tim

I don't mind seeing folks who are new to the game having an opportunity to draw (however slim that may be), but I do like point systems that eventually guarantee that a loyal applicant draws a tag. I've watched my dad apply for the cali elk hunts and late season deer hunts every year for the past 25 years, and never get drawn. Not sure that's the right way to allocate tags(???). I, for one, was glad to see the system changed to the way it currently is (90/10 split). As far as the best system....well...I kinda like the way WY and UT currently run things. Guaranteed a tag if you wait/live long enough, but you always have a chance of drawing, even if you're not in the max point pool.

NO NO!!! This would the best & is use on some of the Indian reservations. On than the first business day of each new year at 8:00 they start taking calls and you decide which tag you want.

In this way you don't have a long application period.

I sort of like Colorados system, knowing more or less how long it will take to draw the unit of your choice, except you can forget any great late hunts. I think Idaho is the most unfair system, only because you have to buy the license and get nothing in return (if you dont draw,no pt earned,$142+ app fees into I.G.& Fish bank).....Other than ID and NM ,buying pts is getting addictive.

Nail, you're right about the addiction. How would a guy with average intellegence be able to tell you how many points they have in any specific state, species, etc ( in 7 states for 19 different species/draws and except for Kali, I can tell you EXACTLY how many points I have for each). Bet i raised my IQ since I started playing the game ( but there was room for improvement).

You can bitck about Idaho but NM has the same system and they don't ask for any $$$ except for $6.00. Idaho could get better but NM could get worse so IT IS WHAT IT IS! Just play the game and hope you win a few.

If I had the insight on stocks and bonds, what I know about draw stats on several different states , i think i would be a rich man. I ,like you Califelkslayer,am not sorry that I can tell you how many pts i have in each state for each species...only I wish I had more.

Remember that Wyoming does not have a preference point system for residents. That's a wreck for those of us that live here; just can't get a quality license. For example, my last Red Desert antelope license was in 1991 even though the odds are about 30% where I apply. I've treid to draw a quality deer license for 15 years and have NEVER gotten one. We also need some sort of fair license system for residents or we lose interest as well.
