Saw this in a post in 2010, but wanted to get some new input on Shockwave Bonded vs Barnes tmz for elk.

Also, thoughts on shooting 250 vs 300 grain?

I am sold on the BH209.

Thanks!

I have been shooting the 250 TMZ's with BH 209 and like the way they shoot. I'll go with the newer TEZ's when I run out of the TMZ's. I got a deal on them but they are hard to load with out a starter or range rod. Never shot anything else really. Go with what works.

I also looked into sabots last year for a UT elk hunt and the majority opinion was that most thought the Barnes was a better bullet (assuming they shoot well in your gun). You also might try this on the Muzzy forum as there are quite a few experienced muzzy shooters there.

My Omega shoots both the SST/SW and the TMZ well with 120 gr of BH209. But the edge went to the SW/SST at long range. I went with the bonded SW/SST. I need to do more testing with the TMZ to see if I can get them shooting well at 300 yards though. I would not feel handicapped using either. As of now, my gun will have 300 gr bonded SW in it this October.

Try the Thor ballistic tip bullet @ Thorbullets.com. They do not utilize a sabot and shoot fantastic. I'm going with the Thor's or Hornady FPB for the muzzy hunt were headed on.

I'm also sold on the BH209. I have shot both the Barnes 250's and 300's in my Encore and give the edge to the 300's. I have a bunch of the old style wide mouthed bullets that shot great but were very hard to load in the field. Not a big deal at the range but tough under hunting conditions. I talked with Barnes about it and they suggested getting new sabots from their manufacturer in Arkansas. The new ones are blue and much easier to load and I still get almost the same velocities as the old sabots.
Old Barnes 300 grainers, new #24 MMP sabots with 120 grains of BH209 equal the best hunting load I have found.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-25-12 AT 07:53PM (MST)[p]BH209 is awesome! I've been shooting it with 195gr PR Bullet QT's with great results in my 50 cal Encore for deer.
