Went scouting with "woody" and had a great time watching a ton of elk and some great bulls. Here's the video we got, throw out some scores too of what you think some of those bigger bulls will score. They should have a good couple weeks of growth still.

Enjoy: http://youtu.be/0qmhvxc9pfs

Nice!

Was that Trophy Spike Buck in your video clips from the Basin?

If You Love Your Country,SHOW THEM TO ME!

I've got Wild Honey Tree's and Crazy Little Weeds growin around my Shack!
These Dusty Roads ain't streets of gold but I'm happy right where I'm at!
All these Perty little Western Belles are a Country Boys Dream!
They ain't got Wings or MM Halo's but they sure look good to me!

Holy cow! HJB. That was awesome! Thanks

Will you share which unit that is?

Would you answer a few questions?
What is that plant that they seem to really like to eat? man, thier gobblein away at that stuff.

At the 2 min mark of the video, there's 3 large bulls just inside the cover, seem to be real content with they're position as their eating away and walking upward, Do you know which direction that wood line is facing?

I'm in the learning mode and any info will help

Thanks Nocwalker

Not sure what the plant is. The wood line is facing North and the slope they are on is a East facing slope, not sure that really matters this time of year, but there's your answer.

Thanks HJB, I was thinking that maybe the preferred food grows better on certain directional slopes. If something like that is true I might be able to scout maps and google earth to help me hone in on particular spots.

If you didn't know, I from the east coast and cannot get out there to scout so, I'm doing my best to have an idea where to start and what to look for. The one thing I read years ago was to look for forested slopes facing north and east. The auther explained that the elk will bed there out of the heat, thats the extent of my focus so, I'm looking for other little tidbits to add to it.

Thanks nocwalker

Glad to help. Just a side note, we actually saw elk on slopes in every direction up there. There were elk all over the place. There was one group of 50+ cows bedded on a South facing slope in the open sun all day. There is vegetation all over up there, not just certain areas. The elk eat a variety of different things as well.

Hope this helps,

Matt

Hey would you share where you took the video at? If it is the fish lake area, don't respond and if it isn't, don't respond that way no one will know. Ha Ha. Really though, those are some nice elk and a few of them look the be around the 350 mark! thanks for sharing the footage. I'm in the market for a video recorder for my dads hunt this fall. Anyone have any recommendations??

All that video was taken with a little point and shoot canon camera. I shoot video through my scope with a little camera adapter. Works great, and I can film stuff out to 2,000 yards pretty clearly.

Yes Sir, I love my little Nomad. I have tried others, but I just like how small and portable the Nomad is. It's a great little scope and I take it everywhere.

No, little Mountain in Northern Utah. It's all government ground out there.

Incredible bulls in there with month to go still !!!

There was one in the trees with over twenty on his third, fourth and almost on his fifths already.

I think you are looking at at least 4 booners in that video! This year is shaping up to be one of the all time greats for horn growth.

Awesome video. Thanks for sharing

Cheers,
Pete

Which one you looking at Pete? Tell me the time on the video when you see him. I'll have to take another look. I have about 30-40 minutes of video at home I still need to look at close. I tried to make a short video.

What do you think those three bulls in the last clip will go? The one with the extra point on the beam sprouting out also has a nice little devil tine that is hard to see in the video.

Matt

Pete, I have to agree, we didn't get a great look at him, but he definitely is a monster. He was really camera shy, it would have been great to get more footage of him. We caught a glimpse right as he was getting in the thick trees. I really like the first bull on the video that we got good video on, if he had more length on his 3rds and 4ths he would that much better!

Thanks again HJB. It's going to be a long 2 weeks before I can get out. I don't think I'm going to get much done at work.

No Prob, sorry I didn't get any video of the "Other Species". Maybe next time.

The one that I think is the mack daddy is at 1:04 and again in the middle at 1:43. He could put on another 30 or 40 inches by the time he's done.

I filmed a bull in 2010 on the San Juan that put on almost 60" between June 28th and the opener where he was bloody horned and still had some velvet on.

The last three could be awesome too. The one with the shortest 5th on the right side is unbelievable up front for tine length. If he adds a bunch on the top to the end he could also be a booner.

The thing is these are all relatively young bulls. Six or so at the most. They could still be growing right up to the 10th of Aug.

It would be interesting to see these guys in full HD. Hint, Hint :)

I'll be done with my house remodel in a week. If you guys need a director of photography with lots of gear, let me know :)

Cheers,
Pete

Woody should be getting some great "up-close" pics as we speak. We put together a little surveillance operation down there. HD would be nice as well, maybe you could just let me borrow all your equipment? :)

One of these days, I'm going to get a setup like yours. What is your setup anyway? How much would something like that set me back?

Right now I'm sitting at $300 for my spotter, $50 for my adapter, and $100 for the camera. $450 for the whole deal.

Nice job! Looks like the drought hasn't had much of an effect. Those bulls had nice long main beams.

awsome i love utah in the early season glassing all them basins for big bulls thanks for the vid !!!

Nice Elk pics. Now if they would just stay there until the hunt!

For what it is worth, I picked up a little Panasonic SDR S26 camera for hunting that fits in my pant pocket. It has 60X zoom and takes some surprisingly good footage. (although you have to have a tripod for the long shots)
It is not HD, but still gets done what I want and the best part was it was under $300.
