Hey guys. I have been pouring over the AZ proc trying to select a mule deer unit. I have 5 NonRes points. I know the units north of the Colorado are out of the question with my points. I'm not interested in Coues until after I get to hunt muleys. Can anyone recommend a good unit south of the Colorado? Or at least give me an idea whether I am even close to drawing a tag with 5 points?

Your correct on having no chance at drawing the units north of the ditch for the late hunts anyway. The early hunt in 12A and 12B may still be possible, someone here will let us know...If you really want a hunt south of the ditch right now there are many units you have a chance at drawing like units 1-10. I would recommend Unit 10, it has a low to moderate population of deer, with some good bucks in the unit. The other units are probably as good as ten, but if I had to pick one out of those ten would be near the top.

Apply for north of the ditch, you never know when you will get lucky and get to hunt in that neck of the woods. Then apply in a state like CO and hunt every year if you would like too.

Keep putting in for the Kiabab. There are very few good units south of the canyon. Unfortunatly the rest of the state hasn't been managed worth a rip, well either has the kiabab for that matter. There are big deer throughout the stste but any marginal unit you pick will have to be scouted intensly if you want a chance at anything 160" or better. If you really want to hunt father south I would hook up with maddglasser. He's got some areas in the desert with giant deer.

Not sure where you're from..West Virginia maybe seeing the "wvu" in your handle? You're better off keeping your BP's than burning them on a mule deer hunt that doesn't include units 12-13. If you want to hunt muley bucks in AZ south of the CR, think about an archery hunt in January in combination with a javelina hunt and maybe some quail, waterfowl, and predators.

Don't fool yourself into thinking AZ is a preference point state. No matter what unit you apply for there will be those with 0 points who draw a tag, and those with more than 5 points who will not draw a tag. Any unit you apply for does not have a guarantee, unless its way down south.

It's Bush's fault!!!

Just because you draw the strip or the Kiabab does not meen you are going to kill a big deer. Also you have to consider how much time you are going to have to scout. It is not uncommon to spend 4-5 days looking for a buck on the strip. It doesn't matter if your hunting the desert south of the Colorado or the Kiabab you have to spend your time or hire an outfitter or all you will be doing is burning points. What is the differance------- useing 15 points to draw the strip and only hunting and scouting 5-8 days and not killing and using 3 points to draw a desert unit and spending 5-8 days of hunting and scouting and still not killing. The differance is you got to go hunting every 2-3 yrs. Oh ya there are big deer in the desert just not everybody has done their homework like I have.

LAST EDITED ON May-07-07 AT 10:04PM (MST)[p]Coues would kick WVU's butt, he's smart to stay away from them. You could put in for 19A or 6B and I'll show you a place or two to go ;).......

O.K. I will spill the beans. Any here ever hear of 2A,B or C? If you have your probably mad at me now!

Units 9 & 10 south of the Colorado are doing well recently. The numbers for unit 9 were much improved last year. there are some very secluded areas in those units. Big canyons along the grand Canyon where the potential exists to find big mulies. I personally know of a 200" set of sheds found in unit 9.

It has been a while, but there used to be some nice deer in 23. The last time I hunted though more cous than muleys.
