San Juan in July

The Blue mountains are an interesting place this time of year. I've heard it from lots of people "You won't see bulls in July" but decided to make a trip anyway. In four days I saw well over 200 hundred deer, a couple dozen turkeys, even a little black bear that wandered within 20 feet of me. I figured he had either mistaken me for his mama or just figured I would make a good appetizer. Grand total count on the big bulls...1.
I did learn some new country, met a fellow archery tag holder out on little dry mesa. Put 150 miles on my fourwheeler and wore away a good amount of rubber from the tread of my boots. Still don't know where I will end up on the 18th, need to see more of the elk ridge side of the mountain first, but I've sure found a lot of options, which was what the trip was all about anyway.

I've said it before many times, I think guys think I'm feeding them aline of BS. Use google earth, save your gas money and time and come a week before the hunt starts. This year is particularly slow as far as bulls seen. I was there for 5 days and saw a 13 total bulls and only one 350+ bull. Thanks goodness for trail cameras and lots of years of learning the country and where the bulls will be come September.

The 18th (opening weekend) will likely be a wash as well based on past years. I know you've got to get there and be there and there is always a chance of finding one and getting lucky but you better find a good water hole (if it keeps raining there that might be useless as well) unless you like hump'n the hills and burning foot rubber.

Good to talk to you Shane--if you get to the end and it hasn't come together for ya, please don't hesitate to give me a call.

Man Todd.....you just knocked all the wind out of my sails. I was hoping opening morning would find me glassing through all the bulls wondering which one to shoot :)

Hunted the Blue's for 8 days last year helping my wife's uncle on the rifle hunt. tons of bulls in september but ill bet a lot of those big guys don't show up until the end of your archery hunt. or at least they were much easier to find once the rut was full swing. i think, and this is just my opinion, that those bigger bulls are lower in thick cover until mid September. then they move up with the cows. you may want to try some of the lower thicker country during the first part of the archery. the bulls were awesome down there last year!!

hoytcam1, I was on the mountain this week and saw 2 350 bulls and 4 bears and tons of small bucks. You are trying to hard.

Chad,
I'm pretty sure I know where Im going to be the last two weeks of the hunt, but I have no idea where to go for the early part. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Shane

I have spent alot of time on both the blues and elk ridge and if i had this tag i would focus on the blues more for the first 3 weeks better glassing and have seen more big bulls on the blues than elk ridge. Elk ridge is a little tougher untill the end of the archery hunt, but thats just my opinion. good luck on your hunt and you can PM me for more info if you want

I was down there this last weekend and the good bulls are starting to show up. It looks like it will be a good hunt from what I am seeing.
My wife and I will be on the Blues for the archery deer hunt, if you need any thing give me a call.
Good luck and have fun.
