Best Idaho Buck unit?

Just wanted your opinions on what you think is the best unit. I lived there for 11 years in Salmon and unit 21a used to hold some monsters. I think things have changed since 1988 though. I don't hear much from around the Salmon area anymore. Any thoughts?

Yes and my wife's grandfather has a buck in there. Is the book supposed to inform me on good units in this day and age?

You might get a few more replies after June 5, when the controlled hunt application period ends.

21a isn't "quite" what it used to be.

I kind of figured I might not get much response with the drawing coming up. I'm a non-res. now and haven't hunted mule deer in idaho since I moved. Thanks for the responses.

45 gets the nod from me as well. Drew it the first year I was legal to hunt many years ago. I'd give anything to have that hunt over again! Don't waste my time applying these days. Odds of draw are remote and landowner permission is for the wealthy only. At least I got to experience it as a youngster, most hunters never will.

Bozeman,

In my opinion with wolves now in the mix the ID general season deer hunting is going to see a slow but steady improvement. Wolves will eat anything but they key on elk. This reduces competition between elk and deer as elk have changed how they behave and where they hang out. ID also has a so called mule deer initiative that may increase controlled hunt opportunities in the future, hopefully anyway. After years of sitting it out I may try an ID general deer hunt depending on how these last few drawings shake out.

not if you have $8,000.00 If you have that much for a hunt you won't get to hunt the ranch. But Rod will sell you a tag. Ron

Who is the big landowner in 45. I had the luxury or running into him on public land and until I pulled out my ownership map and proved to him I was on private he was rather rude. I am sure he has a heck of a time with trespassers.

Not too hard to tell which land us common folk are allowed to tread upon in 45. Just look for the stuff overridden with stink-ass cattle and there you go! What, you did'nt expect Mr. Big Bling rancher to run his cattle on his OWN land did you????????! Not when he can gouge eight grand outta you for the right to cross his fence!

Sounds like Cornell, but he doesn't own all that much in 45. But you said RUDE right?
