HJB and I have been running through some different scenarios for my upcoming Pahvant archery hunt. This bull walks in opening morning standing broadside 25 yards away. Shoot or Pass? Take into consideration we have seen bigger bulls.. Thanks guys!

tough choice. looks like a pretty bull but really depends on if ou think you could have a chance at killing a bigger one. and how much bigger. it would be tough to pass him though. i think i would tho if i was seeing better bulls.

I wish I had a dillema like that. I would prolly get over excited and stick him. He is a cool bull. Pretty boy bull

I'll tell you who it was . . . it was that D@MN Sasquatch!

I seen that same Exact Bull on the Pahvant 4 years ago!:D

If you are happy with that bull then harvest him, but you have a great tag and will have a great time on the hunt so why end it so quickly. You should have plenty of chances at bulls like that if you put the time in.

If you are willing to take a chance on tag soup......pass him. If you'd be happy with him......shoot. Archery shots don't happen real often. Good luck. Fyi I chased a big bull for a month last year.....passing up good bulls to try for a great bull. I have to admit that tag was really bad tasting, but I really wouldn't have been happy with any bulls I passed on. Good luck

Woody, I'll see you there! If he happens to walk in front of me within range I'm sending an arrow his way.
My son and nephew had Pahvant tags last year so we were all over the mountain. We Saw tons of 300-330 bulls but very few bulls over 350, that said we had a ball chasing bulls all over that mountain. My nephew wound up with a 340 bull and my son ate tag soup but we had a great time.

Apex glad to finally meet someone else with an archery tag, i've been on the mtn 4 times now and have yet to run into an archery bull hunter! I'm sure we'll be seein a lot of each other!

kill the one that makes you happy, Me I would shot him.

I'd send one with a bow as he is a fine bull.

Like stated, if you're ok with possible tag soup and your goal is bigger than hold off. However; if you'd be happy with him on any other day then take the shot.

good luck on your hunt. now getting a pic on your trail camera and actually getting in bow range are totally differnt. U had better be awful damn confident or fortunate that u can get in range of the bigger bull to pass a 25 yard shot at that bull. I am speaking from experience. My brother passed on some nice 340 & 360 bulls, 30 yard shots in 2007 because of bigger bulls we had seen. It never worked out, we couldnt get in range of the big bulls, 18 days of hunting hard and we watched the sun set listening to bugles as the hunt closed. That is a nice bull i hope u can get him or 1 bigger.

I agree. There are bigger bulls, but the chances at finding those selct bulls and getting in range of them with a bow is usually a fairytale. We all want to belive it will happen, but it is usually very rare and tough to accomplish. having said that this would be a tough decision. You still have almost a month to hunt bulls and the rut has not started yet either. What the heck do you do?

I think I personally would let one fly. A big typ 6 that will score pretty well such as that one would be too hard to pass on for me. I would never forgive myself if I let him go and didn't get another chance at a bull.

Tough decision for sure.

The bull itself is awesome no doubt. If this bull did show himself first thing opening morning, the ONLY reason I would pass a bull like this is after 13 years of waiting to draw the tag I dont know if I'd want my hunt to end so fast :) It's definitely a tough situation, and hopefully I have many tough situations like this throughout the hunt!

archery hunting for elk is a crap shoot. You may only get one shot at any bull the whole hunt. There are no guarantees you will even kill a bull. It aint rifle hunting!

If you are going to pass bulls like that then you very well could be in for an extremely long hunt. I think the average kill for an archery bull is already around 10-13 days anyways.

I would shoot that bull first morning. Great bull. You can still have fun for a few days, if you kill early. The big part of the hunt for me is playing with rutting bulls. That won't happen until the last week. If I had a Pavant tag the first 340 plus bull in range would be in trouble, even on the first day. Unless you have shot bulls in that range, I would not hold out. Like the previous hunter said, he saw lot's of 300-330 type bulls. Not many 350 plus. Good luck

Just because you have seen bigger, doesn't mean you will see them again...especially after the hunt starts.
But if you have the whole hunt to mess around...then maybe wait.

For me- 340" in the hand is better than 370" in the bush... But I've never killed a bull elk...

LAST EDITED ON Aug-02-12 AT 10:04PM (MST)[p]That bull looks more like a 320 bull to me but maybe I am crazy. I would hunt for the whole season learn and gain great memories before I ended it with that bull opening morning. Just an opinion.

Everyone that draws a premium tag will be faced with the same challange. I'm not sure I would pass on him for his size. I would just hate to end my hunt that soon. I will be hunting a killer Unit htis year in CO andmy wuish id to take a nice bull about 9 days into the hunt. I need that days off from work and the peaceful times in the MNTS.
