Looking to start using a diaphram mouth call for bugling to locate elk. Any ideas on which ones to buy that make great sounds and are fairly easy to learn?

Thanks

Rob

In terms of brand, I tend to get what is available and cheap. I find more versatility with a single reed. Bugle, grunt, chuckle, cow call, calf talk, call turkeys, call in coyotes... No end to what you can do. I think the use of the diaphram is probably more key than the brand itself.

Check out gofoxpro.com hand calls, elk calls.
The new closer bugle tube will change the game on big bulls..the first fully adjustable internal baffle system for calling elk...it comes with one single reed diaphram and it will rock. You can call loud and long for locating, close it down for finishing the bull in tight. Check it out. good luck and good calling, Al

You're going to have to experiment to find a diaphragm that sets right in your mouth, our mouths being shaped different and all. (Fortunately, they're cheap.) I wear full dentures, so can't help you much. But FWIW, the double reed Carltons work great for me and Primos doesn't. That's just me and my falsies.

There's definitely a learning curve and until you're over the hump, it'll take a couple tries before you get it right. But on the hunt, you've got to get it right on the first attempt. So practice, practice, practice. Sort of like playing a musical instrument.

A yellow mountain momma will do about everything and call very quietly if you need it to.

I think so. I don't have a package handy and have to order online as they just don't have much selection here in Ohio on elk calls for some reason ;-) It does good cow/calf calls and ok young male elk calls, and who doesn't want to come and whip up on a wimp? As a flatlander hunting at 9000+ feet I don't do well with a couple calls in my mouth at the same time and using archery equipment while trying to suck in enough air to survive after running up a hillside. I actually like one of the turkey calls I build to bugle with but like I said when I"m working an elk, close in, I'm sort of stuck. I'm also no " I've been doing this for years" type of elk hunter. Tags were too hard to draw often and I've only just given up and started getting OTC leftovers where no one wants to hunt due to the bears and wolves so for what it's worth I like the call for my situation.

Check out the new elk calls I helped to develop, go to gofoxpro.com and check out the handcall section to the elk calls.
The new closer bugle tube is sold with a single reed that is one of the best diaphragms I have ever used...the tube has two internal baffles that move in and out to change the volume...it is the most unique tube on the market.
The external cow calls are available at any major retailer...Sportsmans Warehouse has em on the shelf...check em out, you elk killers will love these new calls. Al Morris
