When do you guys think the best time to hunt muleys is during archery season? I can go the last week of august(opening week for archery here in Colorado) or the the second week in September.

Actually, my plans are to hunt right at timberline. Got a spot all picked out. Is the reasoning just that the animals are up high early and begin to move down later?

Go as early as possible. The bucks are still in the velvet and they are always more visible at that time. And they won't be as pestered by all of those archery elk hunters!

I agree with you. Why do you think that it is that the deer are so much easier to see during that timeframe?

A lot of the times once the deer start to shed their velvet, they retreat to timberline for a few days. I say hunt them early when you can spot and stalk. Besides, they haven't been pressured for some time!

I agree the earlier the better. Seems like once the velvet is off they break away from the larger bachelor groups and are alot more wary of whats going on. I seem to have the best success the first two weeks of the season.

Always more visible in velvet because of the winter coats too. That dark red stands out in contrast against most natural background colors.

Mule deer horns are very sensitive when in velvet and they tend to be out in the open more so that their horns aren't rubbing on trees brush ect. I would definetly hunt early. Bachelor groups, light color (easy to spot) out in the open longer, and to me a velvet mule deer is one of the prettiest mounts around so to me this is a NO brainer. Good luck.
