Anybody do any good during the general elk rifle season. Just trying to get a general idea on how people do up there. I know its a giant area, just looking for opinions.

thanks in advance.

It took quite a few years before I was able to find elk every year. If you kill a spike your one of the few lucky ones

I'll tell you who it was . . . it was that D@MN Sasquatch!

I think east end is better for hunting and crowds.

But, you also have to figure whether you want to hunt South or North slope.

Zoo, hunt the buffer zone. The area between the people that packed in on horses and the people that day hunt from the roads. That'll put you starting at 3 miles in and hunting back to about 7-8 miles. The problem will be packing out the elk though...good luck.

It really comes down to know where to hunt, knowing the elk patterns when the pressure hits.

I know a group of guys that take elk every year. They've been hunting the area for many years now and know where the elk will be. It really comes down to experience with the unit. If you have the mind set that you may go empty handed for a few years but learning the unit over time will pay off then give it a try.

The time of year is the hardest part. My dad annd I have enjoyed muzzy deer hunting in the Uintas for several years because we end up calling in Bull Elk everyday... 5 and 6 point bulls, including one "Growler" we unfortunately did not see just 2 years ago. This was sorta smack dab in the middle of the Uintas, North Slope. (Oops, just invited 38 more hunters over to the north side- :D)

I know there are still elk, and the post about the "Buffer Zone" is spot on in my opinion. If nothing else, enjoy some beautiful back country.

Our group has killed at least one bull for the last 10+ years, (9 tagged hunters). But like has been addressed, for some reason we seem to always be hiking up hill, both coming and going!

When they came for the road hunters I was not one so I said nothing. When they came for the oppurtunists I was not one so I said nothing. When they came for the public land hunters I was not one so I said nothing. When they came for me there was no one left to say anything!
