WY units

I am looking for some advice on a good unit to apply for in Wyoming where I could draw a tag in 2-4 years. Looking for a respectacble buck that could be taken in the high country. The only advice I need is a unit choice to help eliminate some of the footwork. Thank you so much

There are no great units in Wyoming you have a good chance of drawing in 2-4 years. Early region G, you could draw in 1-2 years. Could be fair to good. Lots of hunters. Quality has gone down hill. Chance at a 170-180 class deer. The best Wyoming deer unit is often still not that great. Little chance at 180 plus deer. I would be getting points for Colorado. If your after a decent four point and want the high country experiance try region G. Expect company. Good luck.

Thank you for your helpful advice. Is it possible to avoid the crowds by backpacking in 10-15 miles? And are there pieces of public land that are very inaccesible to the majority of people?

Nope. The crowds are nearly everywhere. And you can't get 15 miles from the roads. About 8-10 is the max. I gave up hunting there in 98 after 15 years. Too crowded and the quality has gone WAY DOWN. That said, it's probably still the best public land deal in Wyoming. As mentioned, head for Colorado. I live in Wyoming and I hunt Colorado almost every year. Much better chances of seeing/shooting a big deer.

Also, read David Long's book. You'll note that you don't have to go great distances from the road to get a good buck.

You can get further away from roads in H, with a little better success odds at drawing. Any unit in Wyoming you will see people and horses. Alot of scouting in a secret basin will be your best bet and be sitting on the buck's escape route as soon as the lead start flying from all around the mountains..

I agree that CO has better units for bigger deer, but isn't it the case that you might get to wait 7+ years for one of those units? With Wyoming, you draw pretty much each year, I think. I plan on hunting Wyoming during my off years of waiting to draw CO.
