Just need some input about a rifle. I currently have two .06's and I would like to try a different rifle. I've been toying with buying a Remington 700 XCR 7MM Rem Mag. I hunt both Elk and Mule Deer. Any advice from the professionals would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Utaz

I'm far from an expert, but I'll give you my thoughts. I've shot a 7mm Rem Mag (Browning Stalker composite stock)for years and truly love it. I've taken thirty-six deer and elk with thirty- eight shots, out to 500 yds, most in the 350- 400 range. However, since I don't reload I have felt that it is lacking in bullet choice for elk. I have been thinking of a 300 Win for elk to get a little more 'pop'.

I used a 7mag since the early 80's, and loved it, never loosin an animal, however since loosing a bull last year, I since bought a 300WSM.?

you can get custom ammo online @ nosler.com

A 7 mag is the only big game caliber I've ever hunted with. I've taken deer, antelope, elk, coyotes, ground squirrels, crows, jack rabbits, buffalo, and my daughter shot her moose with it. It's a great caliber. I have a Remington 700 with a custom stock. One of my favorite loads is 66 gr. of H-4831 with a 160 Speer. It's a litte hot but it shoots under an inch. I playing with some 139 gr Hornady's right now. I have them at 3/4" group right now with 4831 powder. I'm trying some reloader 19 in my next batch to see if I can get a little more speed get my groups smaller. I'm thinking of buying a 300 ultra mag and looked at the XCR. It's a nice rifle but the thing that turned me off was the CHEAP plastic stock Remington is putting on thier guns. I may just buy the SPS, its the same action and barrel but without the tryonite coating, and it has the same stock without the rubber overmolding , and it's about $200 cheaper coating, and have a custom stock built for it.

I had one last fall in a .338 and loved it. It was light and shot outstanding. You can't hurt the thing and just the way that it felt was great. If I would have kept it I would have put a trigger in it. The only reason that I don't still have it is that one of my clients bought me a Kimber for a tip and I really didn't see any need for two .338s so I sold it.

One of the best out of the box accurate guns around. I bought one in a 300 wm. I had the trigger tuned to a crisp 2.5 lbs and had a muzzlebreak installed. With relaods I'm getting 5/8 inch groups at 100yds. I have a custom leupold that has a BDC dial that is calibrated with my load. Awewsome set up.
