Colorado/Nevada ????

Over the weekend I came to the conclusion that I need to start applying from out of state tags if I want to increase my chances of getting a good mule deer buck. This will be a big step for me, because I have never hunted out of state before. I've decided to start applying for a Nevada deer tag and a Colorado deer tag next year. Seeing that I know next to nothing about these two states I figured that I better start my home work now. I was wondering if I could get a couple suggestions on units in each of these states that the experts would recommend. I'll then do me do-diligent to determine exactly what unit I want to start applying for. Hears kind of what I'm looking for late season muzzy or rifle tag, good chance at a 26?-28? buck, and something that is not going to take a life time to draw (5-6 years tops).

Thanks

I'm just about in the same boat as you, but have had a couple of years to be building points and doing research.

Ya'll can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think unit 61 in CO looks pretty good for deer, but might be a few too many points than you were wanting. I'm thinking it takes about 7 or so to draw late rifle tag.

I've been debating on AZ or NV. How come you chose NV over AZ?

Thanks muleymadness I'll look into Unit 61 to see if I'm whiling to wait that long for the tag.

Can't say as I realy gave it that much thought as to why NV other than I have Brother-in-law that drew a tag in NV this year. I'm hoping to be able to capitalise from his exsreance.

Your idea to do both will double your chances of getting a tag. In Nevada you can draw the best tag in the state with 0 points but you could win the lotto too. As far as Colorado, 61 late goes, I drew with 7 but guys at work didn't draw with 7 so thats not a guarentee.

Nevada doesn't have many late rifle hunts and when they do the odds are long but their Oct hunts are good too. There is a late muzzy hunt, a late archery hunt or 2 and a late shotgun hunt and a couple of late rifle hunts after the rut.

In Colorado, a 3rd season tag in a good unit is a good tag and the 4th season tags are right in the rut but hard to draw in most units. The ideal situation would be to find a 1-3 point unit thats got some good bucks and hunt it as often as you can to learn it instead of waiting 8 years to draw something like 61 and put eight years of waiting into one 7 day hunt. My opinion.

Co. 61 has some decent bucks in it. We hunted bulls there 2 years ago and saw some good bucks. It takes a while to get the tag but should be worth it!
