LAST EDITED ON Sep-05-12 AT 07:23AM (MST)[p]I was in the Book Cliffs roadless area last weekend and I couldn't belive how vocal the elk were. I also glassed some bachelor herds of bulls off by themselves, but found big groups of cows with bugling bulls too. They were going crazy at 5 pm and it lasted all night. I know there are usually some bulls that start early, but this was pretty intense and they were decent sized bulls. Pretty cool for Sept. 1st, might be an early rut this year? Archery hunters better get out there and stick some! Good luck to those with LE tags.

Dax

There is no such thing as a sure thing in trophy mule deer hunting.

I have also seen some pretty heavy rutting for this time of year.
On Saturday we watched two big bulls pushing herds of cows on the Manti, then on Monday we got into a herd on the Wasatch that had 4 bulls vying for a piece of the action. One of them was a toad. They sounded off until noon. It was pretty cool to see.

Good to hear Dax. I was in the roadless area until Saturday morning and they were pretty calm. 4 bugles in 3 days. No big bulls spotted, and there were large groups of cows without bulls. Glad to hear they are heating up. I'm headed in on Tuesday for the LE rifle hunt.

I had 3 bulls bugeling on the opener of the archery hunt. They are definitely startin a big earlier this year. This cooler weather will do great things for it as well!

Maybe it's a different year?
Last year the Big Stinkies were still going at it hard & heavy during the Muzz Hunt in the same area.
