Folks, Finally drew a great Nevada Muley tag. Looking for any insight on this tag. thanks much.

Did you screw up. Worst tag in NV. What a waste of $$. But since I feel sorry for you and have some xtra cash I'll take the tag off your hands.

from the "Heartland of Wyoming"

Not a very good tag, especially if the weathers horrid. But, you never know. Best of luck i'll be up there.

22 is a good tag although it like most areas was better in years past and before the prolonged drought and other factors reduced the deer numbers. Nevada to its credit has cut their tags back and maintained their trophy quality. With some luck you can kill a good buck in 22. The unit is very large and you run from Ely down to Pioche with quite a few choices in type of habitat. I hunted 22 3 years and finally got a decent buck the last year - it took me 25 to 30 days of hard hunting over that 3 year period to connect. I had many days that I didn't see a buck at all. You can spend a lot of time and see a very few deer. That is the nature of these high desert units. Again, though the good news if you want to kill a trophy you need to hunt areas where they live - and they do live in 22. I hunted the end of the season which would correspond to the middle part of the new late season - I believe the deer migrate south but that is a factor you should grill the biologist or some locals on - I would assume that is the major advantage you will have is a lot of deer movement in that late season and make them easier to see in those thick PJs.

Nice draw. A buddy of mine got a very nice buck out of there 2 years ago. Try around the Caliente area and out along the rail line east. Best of luck

muleshoe in the southern end of 222 holds some monster bucks but it is pretty difficult hunting. cave valley is another good area but there are a lot of hunters in there. the best bet is to do a lot of glassing from a good vantage point. if you get some weather, going south into muleshoe will likely result in some good bucks being spotted. 22 is my favorite area in the state and i know it pretty well. pm me if you have questions. i will give you some deeper insight. best of luck and congratulations on a fantastic tag

Happy Hunting

gl7mm hit it right on the head. It is a huge area, but for the most part the deer seem few and far between until you happen upon an isolated pocket. I think the unit is getting a lot of attention because that is where they killed the monster NT cactus buck last year during the muzz season.

I drew a tag last year for the rifle hunt and spent 10 days scouting and about 18 days hunting. There was a cold spell during one of my scouting trips and I saw a 3 flat-out trophy bucks. Never could find them once the season opened. I hunted hard and ended up with a decent 25" 5 point on the last weekend. I saw a handful of smaller bucks taken, but one 70-year old guy near our camp scored a really nice heavy horned 30" inch buck.

Plan on seeing some fabulous elk. I got some great video and can't wait to draw an elk tag in about 20 years. Also, the prime-rib special at the Hotel Nevada Casino in Ely isn't too bad for the money.

this area has not been good for years, ndow killed alot of the deer off when they had there doe tags years back. and there is not alot of feed, i have had alot of success on the north end of the unit, i have always tryed to stay away from cavevally and mule shoe area because thats tent city, there is a orange man or 5 or 6 on every ridge, and the cactus buck that was said before was not killed in 22 it was killed in another area. go north and scout and you will find that you have made the right choice, good luck

Here is a buck I shot in 1997. I've been trying to get your tag ever since! I got him in Shingle Pass of the Egan Range on the west side of Cave Valley...the same day a HUGE non-typical came from there and the next day we went back for my brother but we were about 30 min. too late! A hunter beat us to another 30" buck. We also seen good bucks on the North end of Mt. Grafton. Alot of guys hunt the Cave Valley road all the way from Pony Springs to ELY....Good Luck! Remember, you wont kill a big buck shooting small ones.
