Start by ordering maps and looking over the F&G site. The maps should include arial views as well. Are you going with a guide since you live so far away?

Joe, if you are not using a guide, you should get there a few days early if not a week early as there is so much to see. That way you can talk to folks, get the lay of the land, and maybe see some deer.

Thats a real tough hunt , it's in September and weather is a factor , even more so for unit 2. But they still do kill some nice bucks on this hunt. My advice is to contact Rory Truby or San Juan Outfitters , I believe 30inbuck is the man here that is with that outfitter. These guys know , actually live and are in this unit year long , and if anybody is going to know it'll be these guys.

nutt said it. Won't see the numbers of deer as you would in the late november hunts. Besides September is reserved for chasing elk in the high country with a stick and string. LOL - J/K

I do not know for 100% sure but I think that San Juan River Outfitters will be busy with elk in unit 34. You can contact John because we do have a guide that could get you on a good buck in Sept.

That time of year is also the wet season here and with the terrain a good 4X4 is highly recommended and even then if you are not really careful you can end up like I did last year. Truck on its side and your climbing out the side windows.

I wont say much more here but can pm me and I can help you as much as I can.
