unit 421 colorado

I think you remember me (Marriott Timeshare) I have a land owner tag for the region. Im not as lucky as you, mines a second season. What do you think are realistic expectations on deer size, and whats the area like. I plan on scouting it hard, but a starting point would be extremely helpful...Pm me if you want. Thanks for the reply...

I don't know how much help I'm going to be to you Matt. We hunted the Northern part of the unit, in areas that the deer migrate into. From what I'm told, the areas don't hold very many deer until a good snow. Biggest buck that I saw was a 27-28" 4X3. We ended up killing a 26" 4x3 and a 24" 4x4. There are bigger in the unit, we just didn't find them. I would suggest that you put in a call to the biologist and pic her brain. I think her name is Stephanie. She was very helpful. I'll shoot you an E-mail or a PM in the next day or two on where we hunted.

There are trophys killed in the area every year! It's a very large area too. The deer herd is looking very good right now, lots of bucks. 2nd season will be this area's first "over the counter" bull Elk season as well,1st season is draw only for elk and there is no deer hunting the 1st season. So, there will be lots of folks in the woods, it is the biggest season, people wise in this area. I would hunt the edges of the grand mesa, north rim......if you hunt that season and you are coming off the top to hunt below the rim, get an elk tag for sure! Very steep and you'll be starting at 10,000 feet. Do you have a land owner tag? If so that may be a different situation all together!

I live in 41,421, Let me know if I can help in any other way.

What are you doing about lodging? I can point you in the right direction there as well. Not much avaiable during that season, if you don't already have reservations.

Hi Chad. Did you ever get the PM that I sent you? I was just curious if you drew your elk tag this year. Matt, Chad is the guy you need to talk to. He has a real good handle on the area.

Thanks guys, I do have a landowner tag, and should be able to hunt some private. I have some friends that say that a landowner tag is only good for private land and not public, so I need to do some research. JJ thanks for the advice, sounds like the elk are in trouble up there....Im not sure where we will be staying either camping, junction, or rifle..Thanks again..

Landowner tag is good unit wide. The land owner is suppose to allow you access to his/her private land too. PM me and perhaps we can narrow down some things. Bring a fishing pole, if you go on top you'll want one.
