Pope and Young Record?

Hey guys,
I have been a member a few years now, but I kind of come and go based on how busy work and home life are.
A few years ago, there was a lot of buzz around the site about 3 or 4 bucks (Muley of course)in the same year ('04 I think) that were supposed to have broken the P&Y typical world record. I think one guy from Utah ended up initially scoring his buck wrong so it was only 195ish (if you can say ONLY 195!). But there were a couple bucks from CO or NV that were supposed to net 205-210.
My question is why is the WR buck on the P&Y website still the 203 buck? Were the bucks not submitted? Were they disqualified? Not officially recorded yet? Poor website maintenance? I just never heard anything about it and wondered what ever happened. Does anybody know anything?
My favorite part was after one of the bucks was taken, some kid got on this site and posted the same question on every forum about 'who holds the world record typical mule deer?' I think it was the kids uncle or something who shot one of the big bucks that year and he was just looking for some kudos. It was a little funny.
Anyway, what happened in the end?
Thanks,
Soup

If every 200" buck reported on MM was really a 200" buck the record book would be 6 foot thick.

The buck from Nevada was harvested by Greg Krough ,From what I have heard he rufused to strip the velvet from the buck to be accurately measured .In the P&Y rule book ,The record will only be recognized for one year if you choose not to strip the horns.I dont think I would have done it either!

Man, isn't that the truth.......

soupcreek:

The tremenous bucks you're referring to were officially measured lower than what was first reported. In fact, on one of the animlas, the "gross" score was reported instead of the "net" which made the final score substantially less.

The Nevada buck, I'm not sure.......but I think the hunter left the velvet on.

P&Y does not currently recognize velvet entries for world record status. They allow the entries, but they are not ranked and only appear in the book for one printing. They are stored forever in the master CD, but again, are not ranked.

I would not strip the velvet, sometimes i feel people get to wrapped up in what a buck would score. If its big I shoot it, thats my philosophy, I was watching a video a couple nights ago, and a bowhunter passed on a 375 bull, cause he thought it would score to low!!! A 375 ARCHERY BULL!!!! Someone else ended up shooting the bull and it scored 371. it blew my mind.

The Nevada buck netted like 198 if I remember right. As far as the CO buck I am not sure, but since they record hasn't changed I would say that it got scored and came out netting below the current world record.

It Netted 198 for the Nevada Book Because they sutract %3 from the score because he was in velvet, his velvet net score was 202 and some change.

i striped the velvet off mine it rubbed of one side when it fell and slipped more loading it in the truck.

I shot the other buck that was mis-quoted to me by my Taxidermist. Since that time I have become very educated about what to say and when.

My buck from UT was green scored by tax and told to me to be 216 gross with net coming in around 206 or so... I looked up P
&Y and that is when I was starting to get excited... I didn't know for sure... alot of buzz was flying really fast... and finally Doyle Moss and Ryan Hatch both rough scored him prior to the official P&Y Score and Doyle came up with a more realistic score of 202 gross with 194 net...

However, the official score after drying was

196 gross
187 3/8 net

My intentions and the wild ride that this took the hunting community and especially the uncontrollable web-ride of rumors, was partically due to me. I was trying to give a play by play detail of the buck... But that was a mistake because of rumorvile that it creates.

My ultimate concern wasn't about just me, but I wanted to give back and share what I have enjoyed by so many others... a great story of a buck taken with hard work and scouting.

I began my quest in my area nearly three years earlier. I had poor equipment, poor scouting skills, and lack of time committed. In the three years I worked on all those items to help me succeed to the point where now, all I do is scout, hike and work up to hunting season. The thrill isn't the harvest... but the adventure getting there. And the last two year since I have had close calls, but enjoyed every moment regardless.

Every year that goes by... I realize just how special a big buck is and how lucky I am to have harvested such a buck. Any exposure that buck or any other buck gets deserves it because they are all special monster bucks that have outwitted and outsmarted many hunters over the years.

In my mind this buck will be my most prized trophy due to the OTC, DIY, backyard buck. Many other knew of this buck and they could have very easily been the ones writing this story.

I wish those hunters all the success and good luck we all need and hope they enjoy the moment as I did when I finally took down a monster buck.

That buck was my first with a bow... since then I have helped several other hunters take their first buck and bulls.

I have been just as pumped for them as I was for mine... Hunting has many ways of reward. I even carried a video camera for most of 2005 hunt as I followed others that drew tags.

For now, the P&Y books are safe...

I did keep my in velvet and that is where it can be found. The article was posted on NOV/DEC 2004 Eastons Bowhunting Journal.

Your buck is a TREMENDOUS animal.....especially with a bow in the back country. A net 187" typical is a buck of a lifetime, IMO. If I remember correctly, the frame of your buck was the most impressive to me. Congrats again on a super trophy.

BOHNTR,

Thanks for the kind words. If memory serves me correctly, you've taken quite a few good animals and have had some great hunting trips.

Love to hear all the stories so keep posting pictures and we'll see you later.

If I can... I'm trying to post some photos of my trail camera.

2004 Archery General Season Tag, Over The Counter (OTC), Do it yourself (DIY)

The best part is the 30 minutes of video footage I took a week before at 30 yards away.... and their were two of them... Lefty and Righty. Both 30 inch frames.

I haven't topped that yet. But I did just draw a AZ Elk tag... so stay tuned.

In my opinion the Pope and Yound record book is not a credible source for information regarding a World Record Archery mule deer. Archery mule deer hunts are typically quite early in the year when the deer are still in velvet, and a large majority of the biggest bow killed bucks are taken, and have been taken while in the velvet. I am certain that there has been a great number of bucks taken that would eclipse the current world record that have not received that honor because their antlers are velvet covered.

Why P&Y doesn't recognize a "velvet class" world record I don't know, but until they do they won't have a true world record mule deer in the book.

You can get your velvet buck entered into the book, but it will only be there for one edition and will not be ranked.

that kid that got on here and posted those topics about the record deer got his ass chewed and since then he never spoke of it cause lets say he's not a cousin or the guy that shot it isnt his uncle but someone that brought him into this world and he learned his lesson about these things.

Good read midnight, thanks for it and the pics. Its nice to hear the final story behind it all.

Get your buck scored and get to keep the velvet, or get your buck scored and lose the velvet.

It was Officially scored... they do grouping of
velvet records that only hold for a 5-10 year period. Why I don't know... But the score posted was official and I have the Certificate.

At that time it was about 25th overall all for that grouping of time.

To say the least. I was quite suprised and very stoked.

Good luck to you all... I still hope I got a little left to use myself.
