Hey all. I have drawn the wasatch muzzy hunt which begins next wed. If there is anyone out there willing to give some suggestions or tips when it comes to the wasatch muzzleloader hunt, maybe from past experiences or anything that could be useful to my once in a lifetime hunt. I have scouted every other weekend since may and have found the elk. My biggest concern is with all the hunters in this unit how spooky will the elk be? Will the elk I have found previous to my hunt still be in the same general areas I have seen them before? If you have any positive feedback that can help please respond. if it's not positive or your just going to tell me to look on the mountain or in the trees please don't waste my time or yours. Thanks

Bryce

shootem it depends on where your hunting ive been on the wasatch all summer and seen alot of people but when it came to the hunt they all stick to the roads, but as for the elk being spooked i honestly dont think theres been enough pressure to do anything. My cousin has the le rifle tag and has yet to kill a bull he said there bugleing now but still the bulls they have seen have little to no cows and wont come to cow calls or bugles, atleast in the area we hunt but i think your hunt is gona be different and better good luck.

I'd get ahold of Lil Beav & his Dad!

And if you get a Bull,Lil Beav can always pull a few extra inches for the final Score!:D

LAST EDITED ON Sep-19-12 AT 09:00PM (MST)[p]You don't need to get a hold of little beav or his dad...unless of course you want that extra few inches..

There are a bunch of great bulls on the wasatch and you have probably the best dates this year for rutting bulls. The bulls are just getting warmed up right now and will be in full swing when the muzzy rolls around.

I wouldn't expect to see the same bulls you saw all summer in the same place. Once they start rutting they are chasing cows and getting run off by other bulls. Hunters may move them a little, but bulls right now have one thing on their mind and won't be thinking too much about the hunters in the field. The old adage "out of sight (smell) out of mind" comes into play with rutting bulls.

Lastly if you hear bulls in the bottom of a canyon but they don't come out then go in after them! Too many hunters wait for the bulls to show themselves or try to call them out. If you are a big bull and you have dominance, cows and water would you move??

Lastly, good luck and post pics!

Just got off the Wasatch on Tuesday with my Bro-in-law who took a really nice bull. The elk are just getting heated up. You should have an amazing hunt. I can give you specifics if you want to pm me depending on where you are planning on hunting? Let me know.

Two years ago I watched a group of bulls between 2'nd and 5'th waters below rays valley all summer. Near the end of July they started to move up higher and would cross the strawberry ridge road almost daily between beding and feeding. When the early rifle hunt started I was very dissapointed because I had a very hard time locating any of them the first weekend because of the large amount of people and movement of vehicles and atv's up and down road 501. After changing the game plan and getting even further off the beaten path and past the areas i had seen the elk things got better. About 4 to 5 days after the opener things seemed to thin out and I saw very few hunters off the roads between 501 and Indian creek. It was very hot and the elk were just starting to bugle but it was very exciting to get into their battleground areas and witness the craziness of the rut. I ended up harvesting a bull that was not the biggest I had seen but was far from the smallest I had seen in the previous 4 months. The opener on the wasatch can be a hard time but stick with it and hunt your butt off cause it gets better as the week goes on. I love the wasatch unit it holds a ton of solid bulls and you will have fun cause the rut will be rockin.

I had the archery tag this year and agree that the muzzy hunt will be the best hunt this year. The elk I scouted all year just moved down the canyons farther away from roads, but were still in the same general area. I would also have to agree with the comment to go into the bottom if the bulls wont show. That is how I killed my bull. It is a great hunt and Good luck.
