Arizona max deer point holders

OK, what did you do? no need for secrets the stats are going to show how many of us are after what tags anyway. I'm wondering after Garth moved the East Kaibab late into his first pick position how many of you jumped off the strip as your first choice. I was feeling pretty good about my chances for that tag, now I'm not so confident.

Is the drawing still the end of this month or did they move it back due to the online application debacle?

I think I read 1st of AUG was the draw date. I hope a lot of guys jumped over to that draw and left the strip to me. LOL

I have max points and am in for 13B or nothing till I draw. I am not sure this will be the best year for horn growth (driest year on record), but I'll be happy to get out, before they change the rules again. They need to change to be fair to everyone. If the rules stay like now, exclusive draw for max points nonresidents, there is still a ten year or so log jam at the top. Draw or not, I feel they should impliment a 2% (20% of the 10% nonresident cap) nonresident cap on the max points round, if the intent is to reserve 20% of the tags to max points holders.

Hard to understand why it is more "fair" for someone applying for the first time, or the first year after drawing the year before, to pull a tag than it is for someone who has been trying for ten years or more.

Either way, all of the tags get allocated. And it probably doesn't matter much to the animals that are on the receiving end of the hunt.

Either you believe in the concept of preference points, or you don't. But its not clear to me that New Mexico's sytem of no preference points is any more "fair" than Arizona's system of preference points.

Don't change the rules ten years into the game. Now... that, in my book, is "fair".

AZ did change years into the game, just last year. Nonresidents have been buying licenses and application fees for years, thinking they had some chance at drawing strip and late Kiabab deer, early rifle elk, sheep, etc. without being in the top pool. Now that has changed as of last year, but all the money spent on licenses is gone for those not in the top pool. True preference is O.K. for hunts that clear out in a reasonable period of time (perhaps 10 years?), but are unfair when they lock out all not in the first and every year for the better part of their lifetimes.

am in the "Max Pool",as a N.R. and only put 1 choice down ??? yea,13B.Will only have one time to hunt this unit, with Az current 20% of tags to Max tagholders and then add the NO MORE than 10% to N.R.This is a true "Once in a Lifetime Hunt",for N.R. hunters. For the "LATE" deer hunts N.of The River, this is Know a Preference Point deer hunt, and MAX POINTS or bust --- Good Luck to ALL that have applied, accordinally.

You guys are giving me more hope on my 12AE choice since you're staying with the strip. with a few more tags issued for both strip hunts your chances are a little better this year.

Good Luck on drawing Your Late eastside tag,BUT according to MY May issue of huntinfool,THEY have it as a #5 pick ??? No matter,if weather comes/Snow can be a GREAT HUNT but if not and deer stay on top,can be TOUGH --- Looks like "Info" should be out ??? say 8/3-10. Good Luck to "ALL" on those Premium deer tags in AZ.

The strip definitely has the potential for a bigger buck IMO. The Kiabab still has some monster bucks, but if you are waiting for that once in a lifetime tag, I would stay with the strip. To answer your question, yes I think that publication will sway a few applicants, but not nearly enough to give you a much better chance at drawing?

>I feel they should impliment
>a 2% (20% of the
>10% nonresident cap) nonresident cap
>on the max points round,
>if the intent is to
>reserve 20% of the tags
>to max points holders.

I don't agree with the 2%, it would be nice for new NR applicants, but there are a lot of people with max BP who are waiting for their tag and have invested a lot of money. It would only mean a couple of tags under your suggestion, I think 1 tag for the 13B strip since AZ rounds down? All those applicants with max BP for only 1 tag? Maybe a good system would be to give out 50% to the max BP holders and let the other 50% go to the regular draw, similar to Utah? Just my opinion.

>If the rules
>stay like now, exclusive draw
>for max points nonresidents, there
>is still a ten year
>or so log jam at the top.

Also its not an exclusive draw for max point non-residents, and everyone needs to understand this as its been discussed over and over again. Any NR statistically has a chance at the tag, as long as there are enough max BP resident applicants to possibly draw more than 10% of the tags in the max BP round. In 2006 I think there were over 130 residents with max points, statistically, they could have draw all 20% of the tags in the max BP round for deer in any unit, and all the NR tags could have went to those without any points! In the 2006 13B strip, all you would've needed was 9 resident max BP holders to apply and to draw in the max pass round, 6 to go to NR max BP holders, and 1 tag would've gone in the general pass draw for any NR to draw.

Odds are odds, and cannot be computed mid-draw (after the max Bp round only) or based on last years results. Last years results are only a prediction of what MIGHT occur, not the odds for next year's draw nor the odds before the draw begins. Here is the link to the last BP/draw/strip discussion on this site.

True, it is not actually true preference to top points holders, but more than half the max points holders holding out for the strip (and sheep and early rifle elk) are nonresidents. With the 10% nonresident cap, that ratio will sway higher every year. The 20% max points/10% nonresident cap is per hunt number for deer and elk, and total for sheep. Odds are that that the 10% nonresident cap will fill for the really tough draws in the max points round for many years to come. Perhaps a tag or two might escape the max points round, but probabally not. A 50:50 split would be O.K.. I just threw out 20:80 as that is the intended ratio to max points. True, a lot of guys spent a lot of money to be in the top pool (me included), but it was 10% to max points when they started, meaning some of those high demand tags would surely escape (about 1/2 when points started for deer) to the next draw phase. A lot of guys a point or more off the top also spent almost as much money, then the rule was changed last year after their decision to buy into the system to effectively cutting them off of any hope to draw for years.

azbiggame you're right, I ment to say 12AW. that's always been my first and only choice. I'm sure I wasn't basakwards when I filled out my application, I think.
