I lucked out and drew a unit 82 mule deer tag. If anyone out there has hunted the unit or has any info or advice I would really appreciate it! Thanks, Mike

Its a general unit for residents and thus makes it a highly populated area come sept.-oct. Be ready to see lots of orange. What type of buck are you looking for?

Area 82 type 1 is the toughest draw in the state-congrats.Hunt the last week.Concentrate on the McCarty Canyon country, but you can find a big buck about anywhere in the unit.Lots of private,be careful where you go.Get your BLM maps of the area. The later in the season the better. There are BIG bucks in this unit!

congratulations on a great tag. I drew an area 78,79,80,& 81 type 2 tag this year and cant wait. I will be waiting until the end of season to hunt. I am told that the deer move out of the big country and are more visible towards the end of october if we get any kind of snow at all, and they may even be a little rutty by then. Have spent time hunting the area during the general season and have seen a few good bucks in the cow creeks, macarty canyon, atlantic rim, and some up higher around the verde mine country. hope this helps and best of luck to you with the hardest deer tag in the state to draw or one of anyways. As mentioned before get some maps cause there is quite a bit of private land in the country.

Is it really true that this a general area for residents at the same time as my hunt? That's kind of rained on my parade!!!! Is it horse country? Thanks for the replies.

I am looking for 180 plus, but depending on what I see I could hold out for something special.. I don't mind going home empty handed. I just like to hunt.

It is a general season for residents oct 1-14. and you and 19 other people get to hunt it october 15-31

If you'll give me a hand with how to post pictures from my desk top I'll give you evidence of last years hunts!!

Muleymike,

PYmulies wasn't blowing smoke when he said that the general season for residents runs during your hunt - the general elk season in area 21 starts on the 15th and bull and cow seasons run through the end of the month. As he said, be prepared to see ALOT of orange - 21 is one of the most popular and accessible areas in the state because it's heavily roaded with easy country - every year the bulls get hammered in the low country after the first snow.

It really isn't necessary to use horses in the unit as there really is little country that is more than a quarter mile from a road of some sort, and none that's over a mile. Be prepared to put alot of miles on your truck and lots of time behind the glass and you should be able to find something in the 180's with the possiblity of something better. Although it's a great tag, you'll still have to put the time in during the season and every year several of the tags go unfilled.

I drew the 84 limited deer tag and this year they are allowing us to hunt 82 as well during the GEN season due the loss of a large walk in tract in area 84. Does anyone know when 82 went from limited to included in the W GEN area? The bio told me about a dozen bucks in the 28+" range come out of these units each year. I am thinking about going out in the early season for archery as well, anyone hunted it with archery?

thanks

Yes a horse could and would be useful to get into the back country of 82 and you would see the type of buck your wanting,If it snows before your hunt the deer will be lower but if it bluebird skies hunt in as far as your horse or feet can carry ya.

Area 82 has always been a general hunt area for residents. It was part of region D for nonresidents and only recently was region W split out into a separate region, in an effort to ease overcrowding.
