Cache Elk Hunt Adventure

Ive had some time now to think and look back on a great hunt we just had in the S. Cache unit this year.
This hunt started way early in the summer when we first started scouting the different areas we wanted to concentrate our efforts. It was real nice to have the unit literally in my back yard. I set up trail cameras in different locations and would check them once a week or so. We seen a lot of good animals that would only come out at night. As the hunt drew closer I got in contact with some good people who would offer up some great advice so freely. Some of these guys were MM members. Id like to thank TINEBROTHER, woodruffhunter,rpleish,marley,fireballer16,frkybugleboy and Leftysbowman. These guys were willing to share information so freely and were very helpful in looking at different areas that I probably never would have looked at.

The hunt started full of anticipation and excitement. Our first day hunting we were in some cows at first light with one bull bugling. Nothing happened after that. After that first afternoon and evening hunting it became apparent that it was going to be a long hot and dry week with no cool air in sight. We hit our usual areas and were not finding nothing but old sign.

On the third day of the hunt we went back to an area that we knew had water and snuck in before daylight. As a buddy and I were sneaking in, the bulls were bugling all around us. It will be something I will never forget. As we snuck into the edge of the treeline I could see two elk in the morning darkness. They were about 500 yards away. As it got lighter the elk moved closer. I could hear one big bull in the trees that wouldn't show himself. These two elk came within 300 yards and the one was bugling good. I could tell he was an OK bull but want sure until it got lighter. The bull was feeding at 200 yard and I could see he was a good enough bull for me and decided to take him. One shot was all it took and he went down at 20 yard later. It couldn't have worked out much better. I couldn't be more happier with my first Bull. Just the way it turned out and the people I was with made it even more sweeter.
We were in 2 miles from the trail head so lucky we had a friend with good horses to help us get him packed out.
Not sure what he score or that I really care. I had a great time and I hope to do again in the near future.

As for my friend Scott's bull. It wasn't quite as dramatic but he filled his tag with a very nice bull. Ill let him tell the full story if he wishes. Its was a hunt where we seen the highs and lows and worked our tails off doing it. Cant wait for the next adventure to begin.
