I was wondering what the trophy potential is in these units for the mulies. I know numbers are low but the AZGFD website says there are some mature bucks around. Also, when is the peak of the rut down there. A buddy and I are looking for a new bowhunting experience. We hunt the Colorado mountains but just looking for something new. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

All of the desert units hold some good bucks. But don't get dissapointed to early. These deer take a long time to learn to hunt. Numbers are VERY low compared to what you are used to in CO. however a 28" or better buck can be taken in the desert. Don't expect to show up and hunt for 3-5 days, without extensive scouting, and just stumble into these bucks. The peak of the rut is the mid of January. Water is a great option for many people, however there is no other substitute for glassing the desert floor this will consistantly produce your bigger bucks. I have been hunting desert deer in these units for 20 yrs and have taken several great bucks in the units you asked about and have learned the ONLY succesful method is time!

Thank you, I appreciate your help. I am looking for something new, without a lot of other hunters. I might not see a dang thing the whole time, but the area intrigues me. Plus, I don't see a Sonoran hunt in my near future! Thanks again for the help.
