Me and the wife and kids are here to stay in Craig, Colorado!! Now what? I'm going to lean on the experts on this site to point me in the directions they would go if they lived in this area to hunt elk and deer. Any help would be great! We have done some looking around, and we are totaly stoked with what we have seen so far, but honestly I am over come with all the different units and seasons around us! PLEASE HELP????

Congratulations on being able to stay. I love craig and hope to visit there every year for the next 30 or so, tag in hand of course. Just keep your ears open and let people know you're trying to get the boys involved and things should open up nicely for you. Good luck.

Liv4,

There are a number of places to go and check out and get to know them good. Go north out of Craig to the Sawmill road on the right side of Hwy and go up into the Routt NF, make sure and get maps of the whole area around that part of country.
Also up close to the WY border before you get to Baggs, there is a road off to the left that goes out there a long ways. Go a short distance and take one of the roads to the left heading south across the Mesa's and you can and will come back down south and west of Craig. That can be good up there.

Just need to get out there and drive the roads and see where they go and what game you will see. It has been a long time since I hunted that area, my sister-in-law has relatives that own or did own a small piece of land out there right along the Little Snake River back then.

Nice town, use to be really small and more friendly than it is today or the last time I was there anyway.

Thanks Brian!!
My work takes me all over that country you have mentioned. I will tell you this, I find elk and deer in places I am not used to finding them. I'm used to hunting the thick pines and quakies of the High Uintahs in Utah. Hunting tall sage is a whole different world to me. I seen 6 bulls in Unit 3 (just barely on the border of 2) the smallest one was a 310 class and the biggest one was proably a 330-340 class 6x7!! I really wish I would of choose to bow hunt this year, I think it would be possible to get on those ones, I have seen them 4 times in the past week or so. But I choose to rifle hunt this year so I could see how all the hunts go, and how it affects the areas. I hope there is some logic to my thinking? LOL

My wife has never hunted any big game, she has just been bird hunting and loved it!! This will be her first year as well as my boys. What the wife really wants more than anything is a buck antelope to have mounted. Do you or anybody else know of a landowner tag that may be available? We are not rich and can't afford alot for a speed goat tag, but we are good honest people that are respectful of people and property!!

And as far as me and the boys go, as long as the animals aren't to messed up with all the different hunts around here, I think we will do just fine, hopefully!! Are there any trespass permits that aren't to expensive for deer and elk in this area? I would be willing to help anybody out there with anything they may need in exchange for the right for my boys to hunt their land. They are 12 and 14. And really good kids!!

Good luck to you and everyone else this year!!!
