I've been "gone" for a while; sorry for not responding to any who tried to contact me. This is my first attempt at posting anything. I hope it works. Last fall, I shot a bear that actually attacked me. I got a decent buck, the best part of which is that my (then) 3 1/2 year old went in with us (5 miles from the trailhead) and was watching throught the spotting scope when I shot the deer. We were about 1.5 miles from each other, but he and I were on hand-held radios. When the deer feel (long before he heard the shot), he said, with great excitement, "he was tricky, you better shoot again, he was pretty tricky!". It made this a special hunt. I hope the photos work. I tried to post pictures. I just didn't get it done.

I've been trying to post the accompanying pictures. I guess I just can't figure it out. If one of you who knows how wants to offer advice, I'd gladly take it.

The bear followed me (backtracked his trail) for a couple hundred yards and about 25 yards parallel to the left. When I realized something was there, he emerged from the brush, lowered his head, swung it back and forth and woofed a couple of times.

While he wss doing that, I shouldered my double-barrel muzzleloader and fired. I have each barrel loaded with 125 grains and two lead balls. The first two hit well, but he only stumbled; he then made two revolutions to the left, while I shot him the now-empty right barrel again.

He righted himself and came again. I cocked the other barrel and fired. He went down, but was still growing, coughing and crawling. He was about 15 to 18 feet from me.

My first reaction was to use the gun like a bat, but I was afraid I'd break my stock, so I grabbed my knife, which was a lousy option but about the only game in town.

As I realized the episode was over, I went over kicked him and jumped back. When he didn't come after me, I kicked him several times.

Everybody asks, "how big was he?". My answer has always been, "do you mean before, or after, he stopped charging"?

I've shot a few bears, this is a little above average, but average wasn't what I was thinking when he was still moving.

Fortunately, the bear was dying quickly.
